Hi, I'm here and I would like know what some of the Aspies on this site do for a living. I went to school for creative writing, and I graduated with the realization that I never actuall liked creative writing.
My jobs so far have all been things that could be considered "safe" like now I'm a janitor. It has it's plus sides, there isn't much socializing, I'm left to my own devices, and all my coworkers are antisocial old men. However it is not something I would like to stay with long term, as the pay is not ideal and I do not find it fulfilling.
Everything I found about Aspergers and careers comes down to either Temple Grandins list, a careers with minimal social interactions, or careers related to social interests. My special interest is watching television, not writing it, or creating. I've tried to review it, but haven't had much luck with that. I'm just sick of all of the same advice about looking for a career. Can someone please give me some different advice?

Liking what you do is a 1st world privilege. I admit that I have this privilege and life is certainly nicer when you have it.

I'm not ready to say what I do for a living here yet, but I can pm you if you like. It's not one of those listed on Temple Grandin's list and not one typical for people on the spectrum and it's a battle, frankly, but very rewarding.

Truly I think people on the spectrum can work in any field, if they are so inclined.

The answer is that there are no limits. You can truly be whatever you wish. I am a scientist, PhD.

OK, Aspies are stereotypically good at science and technologically orientated work, but certainly there are exceptions. There are some excellent artists, writers and musicians who are/were Asperger's individuals too. No need to let your AS dictate what you might do - you deserve to have a fulfilling profession, whatever that is for you.

About advice? Could you check out your local university or community college? Just ask to speak to an academic advisor as they can assist in planning. Think of subjects you've especially liked in school, besides creative writing :), and take it from there.

I know, check out the Wrong Planet's Work & Finding a Job forum: http://www.wrongplanet.net/forum18.html

Software engineer in the Internet Marketing field. Left school at 14. Dropped out of University mid second year. Set up a company from home after I got fed up failing to work for companies.

It DID well until last year when I battled Testicle Cancer. I decided it's no longer for me and I want to do something in life that I enjoy. I don't make a living no more. I play and study music.

I'd say find something you enjoy thoroughly, and make that your career. Do what it takes within your power. Everything I know in the software field I taught myself from books, training courses, hanging around on IRC back in the early days etc.

I'm a social worker. it's part time, so I don't get overwhelmed by being around people all the time like I did when i was a doctor. I like helping people.

I work as a software engineer. It wasn't my first career choice, I just seemed to have a natural gift for it. I have a lot of trouble keeping jobs though. My average job life span is just a few months.

Advanced master automotive technician, master engine machinist, motorcycle technician, some boat, small engine repair. (20 years)

Heavy industrial machine maintenance, and electrical repair. (3 years)

Some of it I hate to do, but it is very challenging, and rewarding for me, so I just buck up, and do it. All of the go fast stuff is super cool.

There are tests out there that help describe what you may be good at. What you like is all you.

Some may depend on what kind of thinker you are. I am definately visual. I can see things working in my head. If it works in my head, it works on the car.

Retired at the moment, have been for the last 10 years. I work as a electronics engineer( self taught) for about 17 years for the mafia. I have my own lab at home that I worked from so i don't have to interact with other people. I made very good money when I was working for the mafia, but 9/11 but an abrupt end to that. Today, I mostly design and engineer products for the entertainment industry but I can't seem to get my name out there enough to conjure up any real business. It's profitable but not enough to pay the bills.

im a concrete carpenter, I build the forms for the concrete
I think its a pretty good fit I dont have to socialize much on the job outside of hellos you dont really have time to talk
my bosses like me because im one of a few people on the site that they can set on a task and be working at 100% without having to have a foreman breathing down my neck.

Truck driver here.

It's as anti-social as it gets and it pays well. I don't go long distances because of the lack of quality of life that goes along with it. I like the work, I don't love it. It pays. I prefer my career not be my identity (even though I seem to do nothing BUT work these days.)

I work in a residential special school with children with complex epilepsy, autism, learning disabilities and a range of other neurological conditions and disabilities. I have been in this job for 5 years and 3 months and love it! It does get very emotionally exhausting at times but I love the students I work with-they make me feel so happy about going into work every day!

<=- Employment and support allowance (for 2 years) + disability living allowance (indefinite but will have to apply for PIP when they end DLA) + housing benefit

I guess I'm one of the few people who managed to get disability benefits out of us UK people but everyone else was probably dead honest where as someone from the DWP filled my forms and told me to put how I am at my worst only and don't be afraid to exaggerate because whoever looks at the forms won't understand autism.
