Nails on chalkboards don't bother me in the slightest, at least I don't believe so. The sound of people chewing food, even if they are chewing with their mouth closed, makes my skin crawl. It's something about that wet sound in peoples mouths. My least favorite thing of all though...when people whisper or just speak softly, slowly, or deliberately. I'm sure I will think of more soon, I just really want to know what bothers you all.

Is "Almost any sound that I don't have control over" a solid enough answer? haha

NY times blog on misophonia

People licking their fingers, popcorn being chewed, chips being crunched, silverware clinking on dishes, forks scraping teeth, and sniffling. I can't even listen to my dogs eat. People eating apples is particularly annoying. All of these sounds are like nails on a chalkboard to me. I've been told that an occupational therapist might help. I might pursue that in the near future.

Posted a link to a NY Times blog on misophonia. Warning: turn your sound down. It has a guy chewing popcorn in the video.

I hate the motor/engine noise, particularly that of cars, trucks, buses, vacuum cleaners, leaf blowers etc.
Babies' and kids' screaming.
I also hate music. Music irritates me very badly.

I'm sure there are more noises that I hate but I can't think of any right now.

I think people whispering has a more psychological effect on me.

I think there've been several threads like this (about noise) before and I said pretty much the same thing there, too. But any way, I'll repeat the same thing whenever a thread like this pops up.

Would you mind explaining? I'm very intrigued.

I'm guessing that Street Medic probably hates extraneous sounds--but doesn't mind the often blaring sounds of his profession, owing to its "non-extraneous" origin.

The thing that bothers me most are: car alarms (especially pre-2000); dripping water from faucets; subtle yet acute sounds, in general, within my environment.

I grew up in NYC. I used to box my ears whenever a subway train approached.

I wouldn't say that I'm misophonic, though.

I didn't mean anything particularly interesting. People often whisper when they secretively say not nice things about others. When I hear someone whisper to someone else, I feel uneasy because I get reminded of the secretiveness and meanness that are sometimes associated with whispering. So it's more psychological than physical.

That sounds about right, I can get used to some sounds and not be bothered by them, others make me homocidal.

I CANNOT STAND the sound of a person running their fingers along a rough, paper page of a book when they turn the page. It almost physically hurts me to hear the noise and my teachers use to do it all the time.

I cannot stand it when people chew/ swallow loudly-- it literally angers me. Also, any repetitious sounds-- like something being drilled, or the same sentence being repeated many times over and over again.

Sounds I absolutely abhor: the buzzing of flying insects, styrofoam rubbing against styrofoam and opening bags of chips, to name three.

The sound of people eating, slurping etc.
Coughing
Sneezing
Rustling bags
Tapping, though I do that and not be bothered by it

I think I have truly found my species! Everyone I know thinks I'm crazy for feeling like this. I ask people to stop making certain noises all the time ( jingling keys, sniffing, tapping, chewing, slurping, ANY MOUTH SOUND) they all get upset with me. If I wear headphones or something to drown out the sounds they say I'm being rude. I can't win. It makes me so happy to see that I'm not alone.

A sound I really hate is coins rattling on a hard surface, like when a waiter or shop assistant gives you your change, or when coins are thrown into a cash till. Or when you put them into a slot machine of any kind. (The only exception to this is the sound of cash tills in Pink Floyd's classic track "Money' from the album 'The Dark Side of the Moon' - but that's choreographed.) I also dislike handling cash or banknotes of any kind, as they leaf an acrid smell on your fingers, so parking meters etc are a trial! As a result I pay for everything, even small items worth a few pence, by card. When I got my first bank account as a boy I used to annoy shopkeepers by paying for bars of chocolate by cheque.

Interestingly enough, StreetMedic, I also hate the sound of people chewing - in fact the sight of anyone eating gives me the creeps.
