I got back from a walk and having my hair done and I wanted to tell my mother about the amusing thoughts I had, mentioned in another post...but I found my voice coming out almost in a shout, getting louder and louder and she told me to quiet down and asked why I had to talk so loudly... this is something I have always done. Is it an AS thing? Have you had this problem? It is ironic as rest of the time, I don't talk at all.

HECK YEAH it's an AS trait. Another one actually mentioned. And I have the SAME problem. The voice may just get softer or, usually, louder. You have to watch it.

Hello,

Yes, yes, yes! Especially when excited and want to share something my volume goes up.

Been told all of my life to.....shhhhhh... talk lower.

Whenever I drink it is like a drunkeness barometer of how many drinks i have had by the decibels coming out of my mouth.

I also talk fast, faster even when excited.

Been hearing all of my life "You don't sound like yer from TEXAS!!"

Dammit, I am born and bred Texan, I just talk like a Yankee!!

yep happens when i get excited and also i tend to talk louder to people for a short timeperiod after i've been teaching... think i actually LIKE having to project my voice and teaching kinda reinforces it as being my "natural volume setting"

I cannot gauge the volume of my own voice. I've always spoken very quietly, and am often told that I'm mumbling, but when I try to speak at a standard volume, I feel like I'm shouting. Excitement does raise the volume also.

That happened to me earlier! I had a different teacher than usual since mine was in a meeting and when she was just speaking regularly, it sounded like she was yelling as loud as she could right in my ear. She was nice and all, but way too loud! When my teacher got out of the meeting, I was more than thankful.

Go back and read MY post. I DID say it works BOTH ways. And YEP, I have the problem both ways. USUALLY I talk LOUDLY when this occurs. It isn't generally yelling, but it is louder than I would ever think to talk. Other times, it can be almost like I switch the volume off.

lightning88,

You should have told her. She MIGHT appreciate it! 8-)

Not only can my voice be loud, but it is also SHRILL..i have one of those weird squeaky-doll voices and I speak-sing....

unless I am uncomfortable or out of sorts...then I can mumble...or feel uncomfortable about talking at all.

I once had a dog attack me and the owners of the dog blamed the sound of my voice.

My guy has no ability to control the volume of his voice, and it defaults to a near-shout. It's painful to listen to sometimes because he has a naturally loud voice anyway. My sister has bordered on screaming at him before because he's talked over her favourite TV shows (he also has when/where issues...defaults to talking ALL THE FREAKING TIME XD)...she ends up cranking the volume up to the max, and unless I actually tell him to tone it down he doesn't realise she's raising the volume to drown him out :?

Methinks strong Aspie traits there.

I think he's learning though. Slowly. XD I think it's really the cues you have to watch for...if someone asks you to repeat yourself and you know you tend to mumble, they want you to speak up. If someone is wincing, talking in a hushed tone or leaning away from you, turn it down you're deafening them. Lol...

Yeah, I have trouble at times regulating the volume of my voice. If I get excited or upset (or even if I just want to get something out) then even when I'm trying to converse normally I get told thet my volume is far too high - even when I think it's fine. When I was an adolescent it was always a problem (often for even normal speech) but I've managed to control it somewhat.

AS trait? I dunno.

I have the opposite problem. I talk too softly. Maybe it's because I have sensitive hearing.

I speak too loudly when I am supposed to be quiet, and I speak too quietly when in a crowded room where everyone else is loud.

So glad I am not alone in this, but it throws me off and tends to upset me when my mother tells me to speak more quietly or asks why I have to speak so loudly...it really does seem to be automatic!

I remember an incident recently when I was sat having a coffee in the middle of a small shopping mall...and this young woman walked by and her skirt was SO short...and I had my headphones on and said to myself 'I don't know why she bothers wearing anything at all, she might as well go out naked'. Suddenly, I noticed another woman sat nearby looking at me and giggling.
