I live in Canada and I would like to apply for my PAL (Possession and Aquisition License). It's basically a gun license. I was flat out told by some people (my mom) that Aspies should not be allowed by law to have guns. Others have told me my license demand might get shot down (pun very much intended) because of my Aspergers.

Is this true? Can it really be denied because of that? If it's denied, can I sue them for discrimination?

EDIT: sorry if this is in the wrong forum section. I absolutely had no idea where to post this.

I don't live in Canada, but rather a country which doesn't allow general gun ownership (thankfully) then I have no definitive answer for you.

This thread appears to be relative to you and your country, and I believe the answer is yes. However, be upfront about it rather than hiding it, see post #5.

I don't see what would prevent an aspie from getting their PAL. As long as you have a clean criminal record and take the necessary courses, I think you should be good. I've considered getting mine, but I don't live out in the country, so I have no use for a firearm. I do have my Metis card however, so that means I could potentially get harvesting rights. :)

well Autism/Aspergers isn't a mental disorder in it's self so I'd assume if you don't have a criminal record or a mental health record (involuntarily committed) or anything that states that you are a harm to your self and/or other I would assume you'd be ok providing you pass whatever bg checks your country provides.

I had one but didn't renew it as I didn't really possess a firearm anyways. But I don't live in Canada.

I don't know Canada law, but, in Utah, first-time applicants may ask (and pay for) the Utah Concealed Firearm Permit issuing office to perform a background review before acting on the application itself. The applicant then gets a copy of all information which is gathered by the background check and, therefore, can consider whether or not to pursue the permit outright. Maybe your Canada issuing office would provide the same courtesy?
