They may be useless to you, but others enjoy them and that is what makes this board so diverse. There are plenty of serious areas for such as yourself if you have no interest in the more fun and light side of things. Your opinion is yours, not everyone elses.

I agree with Graelwyn, I wouldn't like it here as much if those kinds of topics weren't here.

Some would consider this topic useless, as you can simply ignore topics you don't want to read. The purpose of this topic was to allow you to express your annoyance at things not made conveniently or ideally for you. Well, unless you thought that everything would change because one person had a problem they could have taken care of on their own, but instead had to complain about. You didn't think that, did you?

They're called post whore threads. They're for people who want to boost their post count. I find them tedious too. It would be ok if you could select them out. I just get annoyed when I click on 'show posts since last visit' and 80% of them are post whore threads.

I understand your love of the term "post whore." Really, it is lovely, and not derogatory at all. Commendable.

...but your analysis is flawed. How can you know with any certainty that that is the sole purpose of anyone short of the person admitting to it? (this has occurred in the past, I'm not denying that.)

If you don't want to see those threads, complain about the 'show posts since last visit' not having any options to exclude sub-forums, don't complain about the existence of threads you don't want to read.

If that's the term you choose to use for someone that disagrees with you, or thinks you have an inflated sense of self, then yes, I'm a dick.

edit:

Nice little modification. Cute, but far from clever.

Its pathetic isn't it? Unless of course the name calling is directed at me in which case it is perfectly acceptable.

Wouldn't that be considered name-calling in a sense?

Aside from the fact that I was being sarcastic, it is a fairly moot point. The word is normally as an adjective rather than a noun so I guess it wouldn't really be considered name-calling. As to its offensiveness, I feel that the word more closely implies disparagement as opposed to aggressiveness or intent to offend.

My goal was to get a point across. I think I did.

disparagement, depreciation, derogation
a communication that belittles somebody or something
source

How is belittling someone any different than "name-calling," if these aren't close enough to be considered equivalent?

Saying you don't like somebodies behaviour is different from calling them a nasty name. Disparagement can refer to things other then people; as you quoted from your dictionary; there is a concept of speaking disparagingly of 'things' as well.

e.g. Saying that you find someone's behaviour displeasing and just outright calling them a 'dick' or an 'a**hole' are two different things; the former not being name-calling whilst the latter is.

The word pathetic isn't really considered a pejorative term in most uses.

We can only be judged by our actions. How is attacking the action not attacking the person?

If you say someone's actions are like those of a child, how is that so different from calling the person childish, at least at the moment?

I already know this could continue all night, so I'm leaving it at that. Feel free to nitpick further. Nitpicking being an action ...so that's not insulting or inflammatory, right?
