Access to specialised counseling services and counselor educ
On an Autistic Facebook group, somebody posted about going to a specialist counselor for post-trauma counseling.
He had difficulty because the counselor used phrases that were hard for him to understand, and because he found it hard to talk about somethings and wanted to write it down. Eventually this counselor told him "If you're on the spectrum maybe this isn't the right place for you, and if you can't talk about it maybe counseling won't work"
A few commenters had had similar experiences. One person aid they'd been referred to a pediatric psychologist for pre-marital counselling, because they'd know about autism.
That's not okay, counseling world. We're vulnerable and need this kind of care more often, but you're not equipped for us.
I think there needs to be more education about autism and how to work with autistics available to counselors. I'm sharing this to ask,
has anyone had similar experiences and been unable to find a counselor who could help them on their problem?
Has anyone found a really good specialist counselor?
Does anyone know of programmes for counselors to learn about autism?
Does anyone know how we could arrange for some such programmes to start up?
