I absolutely hate the people who pity me because I'm autistic. They feel so horrible around me. I feel they are the ones who actually spread the bad stereotypes that we are helpless and such (I am NOT helpless, will not need a caregiver, never will, and never let anyone control my life.) Of course, there are those who will need a caregiver, but the pitying and cure-finding DOESN'T HELP! I am so angry at them. They pity me because they think I'm helpless. I don't like it at all. Who agrees with me? Say "Agree" and share your story of pity-partiers.

Agree, its especially hard because some of the stereotypes are less about us, and more about ways the modern world is messed up, ways that many NTs shrug and take for granted when maybe they shouldn't.

But being angry probably won't help you out in the long run? They're probably just using their pity to cover complex emotions in themselves they themselves don't really understand.

Agree, I hate this type of thing. I hate being treated differently than others in general. It's funny because most NTs are mindless sheep who only care about the latest trends, and have no opinions of there own.
If a prick starts to act unnecessarily nice to me because they found out I have AS, I just get them to buy me stuff

sometimes i feel like people are treating me like a charity case, to boost their own moral standing.

but at least it makes it easier to pick out the people i don't care to associate with.

I also hate those pity people who wear their blue puzzle pieces on their sleeves. There's nothing in the world that I hate more than autism pity directed at me. One such person asked me how I get through life every day, being autistic. I looked her square in the eyes and plainly said to her, "The same way as everybody else."

I recently had the following conversation.

Woman: "My colleague's son is autistic. I don't know how she can deal with that--it must be awful."
Benjamin: "My son is autistic. He's just a kid who thinks differently."
Woman: "But isn't that hard? How can you relate to him?"
Benjamin: "I'm autistic too."
Woman: "Uh, umm, but, uh... really?"

Virtue signalling at its finest. "Look, I have an autistic friend! I'm sooooo socially conscious!"

I hate the pity thing too, it drives me crazy when people ask how I'm able to cope when I "suffer" from autism every day. I don't suffer, I'm actually quite happy, and not in spite of my autism, it's just a part of me.

I also really hate the people who see me as an "inspiration", as if my very existence is some sort of miracle. I'm not that special. Yes, I had to work harder to get where I am in life, but so do lots of people. I never see anyone referring to poor people or people of colour as "inspirational", it seems to be a term uniquely reserved for the disabled, and it drives me nuts.

Personally I require a lot of assistance. I've heard stuff like "poor kid" plenty of times and doesn't bother me much.

Pitying autistics is a prime example of the cliche "The road to hell is paved with good intentions"

You hate it because they pity you, but are not willing to back down and let us autists take over and finish what they started.
