So, I wasn't quite sure what forum to post this in. I am a parent, but not of this child. It does involve social skills, but not on a basic caliber.

I lead a group of children, 2nd grade, once a week. Well, tonight I noticed one of my students slinking between two chairs trying to "disappear." I am not the only 2nd grade leader, in fact, there are two other adults. So, I took it upon myself to sit beside the slinking boy. He didn't want to talk, but he said it was okay if I sat with him. That was fine with me because, honestly, I didn't know what to say to help him. I felt like it was one of those situations where normal people know how to respond, and I just wasn't privy to that information.

Anyways, I sat on the floor right beside him and as soon as I got up he pulled the chair back around him. Then, when it was time to leave he kept trying to sneak out. I didn't get it - he is one of my best behaved students.

Well, my eldest son explained. He said, "Mom. He didn't want to go home."

As soon as he told me that it made so much sense, and my heart broke. This kid has a bad home life and I wish I knew how to help him, or how to reach him. It is hard though, he is stand off-ish, and it takes a lot out of me to form those "normal" connections. I wish I knew what to do. Any ideas?
