"Safe Space" is a term which typically refers to places or communities (either online or off) where perceived bigotry toward victim groups, harassment or disagreement about politics is not tolerated -- an autonomous space created for individuals who feel marginalized to come together to communicate regarding their experiences with marginalization and oppression.

While advocates laud safe spaces as sanctuaries for those who are discriminated against, critics have argued they promote anti-intellectual attitudes and stifle free speech.

What is a "Safe Space"?

They are controlled environments (insofar as they can be) in which people can discuss certain issues and support one another.

Safe spaces provide a network of support and understanding.

They are an oasis for some groups who are otherwise denied safety and respect by the world.

For the oppressed members of the group, it's a space for healing.

For the privileged members of the group, it's a fun intellectual exercise.

For victims, it is a place to escape blame.

What is an "Echo Chamber"?

A space where people only repeat and agree with certain mutually-approved ideas, patting one another on the back instead of contributing new thoughts. An echo chamber is thought to be useless because nobody is learning anything new or expanding their perspectives, only dogmatic tropes of victimhood. Incel websites are typically Echo Chambers.

Is WrongPlanet a "Safe Space", an "Echo Chamber", Both, or Neither, and should it stay that way or change?

WrongPlanet has been a safe space since inception and would probably cease to exist if it were to stop being one. It's pretty archetypal.

Like any community, WrongPlanet can lapse into an echo chamber at times. However, it does contain a variety of perspectives on most topics.

It has mostly been a Safe Space for me & it has done aLOT of good for me & I've seen this community do a lot of good for other members so I do NOT think it should cease being a Safe Space.

While WP has elements of a safe space since certain opinions are not allowed. NT’s are allowed as well as disagreement about both politics and nature of autism. At most WP is a partial safe space.

That's true. I've seen more than a few users make posts about leaving or wanting to leave for a bit because they felt like they or their views were getting attacked so this place def does not seem like an echo chamber to me. This place does seem more like a safe space than a hostile environment to me at least. BTW this is NOT my version of a Safe Space

I see it as neither. You are free to have your own opinion and no one is going to ban you for it, even if you have the
wrong views.

This is exactly why WP is a safe space for me. I had that problem on other forums where I would get attacked for going against the grain & on one forum members were petitioning to have me banned when I decided to leave.
