Where I live, churches are collecting food and giving it out; schools are being used for food drives, my local grocery store is fund-raising for needy families.
I know of a number of 50-60-year/old couples whose kids are moving back in with them; 2 couples within walking distance let their married kid and spouse and kids move in.
Thing$ are getting rough.
And today it was announced that Kim Kardashian spent one. Million. Dollars. on her birthday party.
Supposedly she rented an entire island?
And people are losing their jobs, their homes, and lining up for a box of food?

I hope hordes of hungry homeless people wade ashore onto the birthday island.

The economic damage from the shutdowns is far too massive for a million dollars to make any difference.

Well, Johnny Depp apparently once spent $ 3 million on a tribute event to a deceased friend... by shooting his remains out through a cannon (!)

When confronted by the claim, Depp called it erroneous… and stated that he in fact spent $ 5 million!

We may not be able to keep up with the Kardashians, but can the Kardashians keep up with Johnny Depp?

That being said, I'm sure that there are other very, very wealthy people who spend even more money - even in these COVID-19 times - on even sillier stuff, but who do so without announcing it to the public...

A $100 birthday present for 10,000 children...
A month of $10 meals for more than 3,000 people...
5 years of private school fees for 20 kids...

$1 million dollars can so make a difference.

Sometimes I think some of these celebrities are too rich. I think that some of that money should automatically go into the economy or charity. If a celebrity has £600 million, they will still be mega rich if they had £100 million instead if the £600 million went to struggling services. No human needs that amount of money. That is why some movie stars turn to drugs. They have so much money that will never all be spent in a million years, that they get bored because they have bought anything you could ever wish for, so they decide to spend their remaining millions on changing their appearance drastically like Michael Jackson did. All that money he had just made him crazy.
Many people say that they turn to drugs because they can't cope with all the pressure of being famous, but really they just get too much money that they end up not knowing what else to do with.

I don't know much about celebrities, so I looked this one up, saw who she's married to, and now I understand what the outrage is really all about.

I also saw in the last couple of years they have donated millions of dollars to various causes. But I guess I wasn't supposed to see if any good had come out of them, and just condemn them, whilst making myself sound righteous.

The obscenely wealthy often behave so terribly in times of crisis. I truly don’t understand how people like Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk and the Kardashians and all them can live with themselves and wake up each morning, knowing that they could alleviate so much suffering for a sum that they wouldn’t notice missing from their accounts. But they don’t do it.

This is a fair point, and is indeed quite true, but he was literally fulfilling the funerary wishes of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson. Somehow literally blowing that kind of money on a funeral is somehow less disturbing to me than blowing that kind of money on a birthday party; but then again in spite of his decades of excessive drug abuse, admitted craziness, and eventual suicide... Hunter S. Thompson is a LOT less disturbing than that woman overall. At least he was a great writer, philosopher, and to a lesser extent political pundit. I've yet to understand what exactly she does or why she is famous.

He overpaid for the canon. My neighbor has some old one in working condition and I’m sure he would have charged a lot less.

Very true. Cannons are quite more common than one might assume, particularly in this part of the country in which everyone loves reenacting the Civil War [though I'm not really one to talk, I have more than one renaissance faire costume and attended the GA ren fest annually before the pandemic] But much of the expense was attributed to the funerary event itself, as well as the shell containing Thompson's cremated remains which was a cartoonishly expensive custom handmade firework [I believe the shell cost hundreds of thousands of dollars in and of itself]. To be fair, none of this is anything new. Vikings, Egyptians, and most other ancient civilizations did not hold back when it came to funeral celebrations for the elite.

Apparently, Johnny Depp was first a fan and then a friend of Dr. Thompson.
My understanding is that Mr. Depp recorded a ‘Books On Tape’ of Dr. Thompson’s first popular book ‘Hells Angels’.
He also starred in a film about Thompson in Las Vegas.
His $$$ funeral was not celebrated during a plague, which has caused entire store CHAINS to go out of business.
That’s hundreds of jobs.
The TIMING of announcing her birthday extravaganza is incomprehensible to me!
The cashiers at my local grocery store are behind plastic shields now, as are the bus drivers.
The shopping baskets are wiped down with sanitizer between customers.
Scary times :(
