Before you sign anything, I suggest you first see The Invisible War, a 2012 documentary film written and directed by Kirby Dick and produced by Amy Ziering and Tanner King Barklow about sexual assault in the United States military.

I was a servicemember and I don't recommend it. The military will own you. Even if you did something low-effort to survive like getting a low-wage job and sharing an apartment, you'd still have your freedom and possibly be more comfortable than you'd be in the military.

If you join anyways, and if you value your safety, don't pick a very general job like cook or guard (because they could send you anywhere) or a job that is likely to be specific to or very needed in unstable, war-torn parts of the world.

Sounds like super fun :)
In Sweden, it's not allowed when being autistic.

Boot camp was a breeze for me, since none of the abuse the drill instructors heaped on me could even come close to being as bad as the abuse I received as a child.

Regular service was difficult only because I was surrounded by jerks who had no concern for good order, self-discipline, and doing things right.

That's awful :(

It was not so bad ... they promoted me to E6 in six years when it normally takes 10 to 12 years to earn the same paygrade.  All I had to do was be where I was supposed to be when I was supposed to be there, and doing what I was supposed to be doing.  I stayed out of trouble, kept my quarters and uniform clean, my hair trimmed (back when I still had hair) and saluted even when I was not sure I had to salute.  At the end of my enlistment, I earned an honorable discharge, VA housing loans (no down-payment!), and the Montgomery GI Bill (free tuition!).

I meant what you said about your childhood as well. No one should suffer that.

"Suffered" -- past tense.  Sure, it was hellish at the time, but at least now I can put up with a lot more BS than most people before I snap back at them.  Besides, nearly all of those who abused me are now gone or severely disabled -- being a bully and engaging in risky behavior seem to correlate highly.

Yeah, they do. I have no idea why. (Not sarcastic. I genuinely don't get it.)

i think the OP should not be in a big hurry and should weigh this major life event as carefully as if entering any long-term LEGAL contract. if you can handle brassholes [or even your fellow same-rank fellow airmen/women] micromanaging your every move, watching for weakness/backstabbing, and playing ceaseless head games with you, go for it. the air force has the reputation for being picayune [honestly i don't know where some folks got the impression that it was somehow more "relaxed" than the other services]. in the army [outside of basic/AIT] you could get away with a tiny bit of slop, NOT SO in the air force!
