A woman from England says she mistook a small box of firework poppers for popping candy. When she tried to eat a handful of the poppers, she reportedly suffered burns to her mouth.

"I remember the moment I crunched down on a handful of the ‘sweets’ -- and instantly felt explosions in my mouth," Boothroyd said. "I felt a burning pain straight away. I’m still in agony and nearly lost a tooth after it cracked from the explosion."

Like many other in modern society, she tried to put the blame of her mistake on the store where she bought them. Lisa Boothroyd says she bought a box of Fun Snaps from a local store, where it was stored near various candy items, Southwest News Service (SWNS) reports. According to her, the product’s placement in the store and the design of the box led her to believe that the Fun Snaps were candies

So, I guess I should not take the phrase "bite the bullet" literally. There goes tonight's menu...

jimmy m, you bring some interesting, entertaining things here. It's a good thing this is not a class; I'm not sure what a teacher would make of your book reports! :cyclops:

Riiight. So she thought they were candy? If this were the case why didn't she check the ingredients?

As we say in the UK she should've gone to spec savers!

Most fireworks you buy are set off by flame, and not by percussion.

You have to strike a match and light the fuse. Its not like a landmine that detonates from weight being placed on it.

So I am surprised that those things detonated in her mouth from her just biting into them.

One's impulse is to laugh at the person for making the mistake, but I dunno. I might have thought they were candies too if they were next to the candy aisle.

In the US fireworks are very restricted in where they are sold. So you wouldnt even have that juxtaposition in American stores.

It has on the side of the packet that they are Manufactured by Brightstar Fireworks
and they are not to be sold to persons under the age of sixteen.

Should have been a clue that they were fireworks and not candies.

Are these those things that you throw onto the ground and they make a popping noise? How did she think those were candy when she looked at them. lol

There is one kind that is set off by percussion, like a small piece of tissue with some small rocks and gunpowder inside. I think that is the kind she ate. Guess she didn't know to take the paper off of candy before eating it. If she had taken the paper wrapping off, it would have been obvious it was rocks and gunpowder.

We used to have those at the local grocery. They were usually in the checkout isle with candy and other non-edible items like lighters.Never heard of anyone ever eating them.I don’t think we have them now, my kids used to get them.
Maybe she was drunk when she bought them.

I do see her side of the argument though. Why were the fireworks sold right near the sweets section?

I've mistook stones for sweets before. I was at a wedding and each person had some smoothe, clear stones at their seat in a little dish, and I thought they were little sweets. So I sat there sucking on one for about 5 minutes, wondering why the other people at my table sat giggling.
I was just about to say "these sweets taste like nothing" when I suddenly realised they were just gem stones for decoration, and I spat it out.

I can see mistaking that box for popping candy, but if nothing else, I would think she would notice upon opening it that they look like wrappers with stuff inside and tried to unwrap one first, then seen that it is not candy.

I think the fuses on the tops of the fireworks should be a good enough clue.

Some people are stupid they can't be bothered to look at the box and read the label to see.

Some candy has "fuses" that should not be lit--but it is customary to unwrap them before eating them. (Sometimes they are lit, however. :) )

Same question I had about the unwrapping of the "candy"

Probably not the sort of explosion in her mouth she's used to.
