Pretty sure the older guy I talked to on the phone for an hour and a half yesterday is an Aspie.. if not he's maybe very ADHD ?? He rambled on about stuff that was irrelevant to his profession or my business reason for phoning for quite some time.. but, I wasn't super pressed for time, he was friendly enough and interesting, And I actually needed to talk to him out of all the local experts in his field because I'd been phoning around for the last couple weeks talking to code compliance people, builders, structural engineers etc and was eventually referred by an engineer (who Also sounded a bit autistic to me, if not very ADHD) to this guy as my last best hope before calling random architects for info.

This guy is a code compliance consultant and he works closely with an architect if she's needed. Perfect, that's what we need. Plus he knows aaaaallllllll of the ins and outs of the building code in this city and the history of buildings and changes in this particular part of the city, the inspectors, the permit processes - all the little details of how things need to be designed and constructed in order to get approved by the city vs. rejected and delayed without a complete explanation - which can cost many dollars trying to figure out and get right, plus months in pre-construction delays.

So, despite this guy seeming like an old rambling Aspie, the stuff he goes on and on about is Mostly on topic and exactly the topic we need an expert in, and so it seems he's turned a special interest into encyclopaedic knowledge and carved out his niche in the economy here over the last few decades - and now when you need to know what he knows, he's the guy you gladly pay $160/hr to tell you stuff. $2-4K for his services will be a bargain if he turns out the info & drawings we need to work from that will let us get all the building permits we want from the city for some existing modifications to the building & some new renovations.

Go older Aspie man go! Make that money, you (building) code compliance nerd. :D Just thought I'd share simply because there are niche industries out there that Aspie brains can excel in and make really good money at if it's their thing.

I hope the person you talked to is well paid and also well satisfied.

Expertise is definitely important to myself and the Aspies I know. Still, many hit workplace glass ceilings - in pay or career growth depending on workplace culture. Bad companies will call the bluff on their expert but otherwise undervalued Aspie (ceiling or leave). Perhaps it's better in gov't where pay is well-defined or transparent, or there are technical tracks, or 360 Reviews.

I ran into a likely Aspie at the thrift store yesterday. I was greatly amused by the unsolicited expertise he offered his fellow shoppers (everything from AC/DC Class 2 transformers to 8 tracks). When I left, I went over and thanked him for his information and I meant it. He said he hoped to see me again. I hope so too.

It’s his own code compliance consulting business so I’m sure that once his bills are paid he makes good money. Hopefully he gets a lot of work. Others might be put off by his rambling, never know, but I recognized his encyclopedic expertise in exactly what we need done and contracted him to do the work I’ve the phone without hesitation. I don’t even care if he bills us for a couple wasted hours - I Know that his job will be more thorough and complete than literally anyone else I could have hired. 8)

I didn't register the consultant bit initially. That's great! In a support group of mine we have 1 person (the eldest) who's self-employed (a consultant). Glad that you recognize and value expertise combined with quality.
