But, at the other end of the spectrum, there are more single women than men aged 50+

So, if you can hold out long enough, the field will be yours.

My mom told me when I was 17 that I should date people I "do not like".

If I actually listened to her advice I would not still be alone and single at 33.

There are very real sociological reasons for not wanting young and middle aged men to be largely single and unattached rather than married or with a partner.

China, due to its longstanding one child policy, is and will be Ground Zero for this experiment.

I assume by “do not like” you mean incompatible. Being with someone incompatible is worse and more lonely than being on your own and you don’t get any sex either.

Or you could be stuck in a loveless relationship as that's all you've known and breaking it off is scary as you've invested so much, so you stay in the relationship for your kids or other reasons as you don't like change. You are almost trapped due to your bad choices.

On the flip side some consensual arranged marriages ( or quasi-arranged marriages) work and over time they do fall in love.

It's a crapshoot either way.

The reason women over fifty are mostly single is because once bitten twice shy.
