Are you scared of smoke alarms?

I remember crying when I was 4 and my family did a fire drill.

Yeah I don’t like smoke alarms

No.
Loud noises do not scare me.

Sudden loud noises can startle me (though not very often), but any symptoms due to getting startled never last past half a minute.

I never mind them myself.

I'm not normally scared of loud noises. Which is a good thing, because I used to live in a home where every time someone was just cooking a meal the smoke alarm would go off constantly. It's the increase in temperature and not actual smoke that sets off the alarm, and it was practically next to the stove.

Of course it was extremely annoying, and I remember joking that the one time it wouldn't go off would be if there was a real house fire.

I wouldn't say I'm scared of them but I cannot stand the noise they make. It's a good thing we have a new one that doesn't have false alarms every time we burn a corn dog.
But I suppose the point is to make a horrible sound so everyone gets out as fast as possible. If only there didn't have to be drills...

My girlfriend is also on the spectrum & she's always been very sensitive to loud noises including from smoke alarms. She usually wears one earplug in our apartment partly because she's afraid of the alarms going off even though the ones in our current apartment usually only go off when they're being tested. Cass mishears things a bit in general & it's worse when she's wearing an earplug, I sometimes find it very funny but sometimes it's very frustrating.

It is especially bad when the smoke alarm starts chirping in the middle of the night to indicate that the battery is low.

When I was really young we had this smoke alarm that needed to be plugged in to work, and if it got set off because something we were cooking made the place smokey, we'd just go and unplug it. Of course we'd plug back in later.

But the noise it made was awful. Instead of beep beep beep beep it made a very loud noise and I'm not sure what the right onomatopoeia is for it... maybe like a really long honk sound.

I'm not scared per se, but the sound of a smoke alarm going off is very distressing, and I go into a kind of mild panic mode where I'm just thinking: "Make it stop, make it stop." But overall I think I deal with it reasonably well.

And yes, when the battery is low and it keeps making little beeps that is super annoying. Last time it happened I didn't have any replacement batteries at the house and had to wait to go out and get them.

I've disconnected smoke alarms a couple times at our previous apartment because they kept chirping even after we replaced their batteries; the alarms unscrew easily. Oddly one alarm still chirped after replacing the battery but it did not chirp when there was no battery in it, which of coarse is the exact opposite of what d@mned thing is supposed to do :x Least we had a solution till property management got around to sending maintenance there to replace the alarms :wink:

Not specifically but would probably startle me if one started going off.

When I was around 5 I got scared by one, but I didn't understand what was going on. Once I learned it's to warn about a fire I figured it made more sense to scared of the fire than the alarm warning about it.

At my previous house I didn't have air conditioning, and the humidity can cause smoke alarms to go off. I had some that were put in by the fire department and were supposed to last ten years and the only way to make them stop going off was to "permanently disable" them. I don't remember what that entailed but I had to do that with one of them, after only a few months of having it.

Not scared of them but I hate the noise they make, and they often go off when there isn't a fire. There was no such thing when I was young, so I grew up feeling that fire safety was a matter of making sure I didn't allow a fire to start. I've heard that some types are less prone to false alarms.
