Certain countries have long had a church tax where residents of the country pay a percentage of their income to the state to give to a religious organization such as the Roman Catholic Church.Some examples of these countries are Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Germany, Austria, Spain, and Italy.Some countries like England, France, and Mexico have abolished their church tax. America has never had a formal church tax in modern times but in colonial times some churches in some colonies I am told were supported by taxes.On the Wikipedia article for church taxes it says the Supreme Court has never ruled whether such a tax could happen in America but I dont see that tax coming to America in the future.Thanks in advance.I would not like having to pay 3 percent of my income to a church in addition to all other taxes.

Even if the Supreme Court has never had occasion to rule on it, such a tax would pretty obviously violate the "establishment of religion" clause of the First Amendment.
