But…but…women don’t have penises (according to the Church’s notion of gender). I just can’t see how a female pope would even work.

I once heard that many years ago a woman may have been the pope impersonating a male. I don't know if it's true, but those robes look pretty good at hiding any telltale shapes or bumps, and back then a lot of people were really thin or gaunt, which would have made it easier.

Women weren't allowed to do much of anything a long time ago, so if they impersonated a male it wouldn't necessarily have been because they wanted to, but so they could actually do things women are allowed to do now. At least in most western countries, anyway.

pope (Latin: papa, from Ancient Greek: πάππας, romanized: páppas, lit. 'father')

Popess is the word we'd most likely use, but Mater or something derived from it would be more correct.

In the Middle Ages some writers alleged that a woman -- disguised as a man -- was once elected Pope, and then, after about two years, was very violently killed when her sex was discovered. See Encyclopedia Britannica and Wikipedia for details.
