If you have a state ID, can you use it if it expired?

It won't be valid if it is expired. That is why there is an expiry date in the first place - to tell you when it is valid until.

Put another way - no, you can't use it, you need to renew it/get another one.

That is usually the way it works for different types of identification, all of them that I know of, anyway.

Correct, you can't use it to prove your identity after it's expired.

The good news is that it might not cost much. I got one for $5 in Arkansas the other day. The hardest part was making sure I'd got all the papers collected together. Various bits of evidence that I am who I say I am. There'll be a list somewhere saying what you need. Probably one of those "one of x, and one of y or two of z" things. I think they also checked that we'd paid the car tax up to date before they'd give me the card. It's the first one I've had, and I don't know if they make it easier next time.

It is not valid but the several times I have let mine lapse I got away with it because they usually do not check it that closely. If you have to check on it many times a day checking to see if it has expired is very time-consuming. That said it is still best not to let it expire, and to start the process of renewal early.

Yes, the powers that be don't mind inconveniencing ordinary people, do they? At my age it's probably wise that they get me to renew my driving licence every 2 years so they can make me declare that nothing has happened to stop me driving safely (like going senile or blind), but a passport or an ID card is about nothing but identity, and that doesn't change, unless you're a shape-shifter or something. In the case of passports I think they're likely profiteering, but the ID card is so cheap that I can't see there'd be much profit in it for them.

Trouble with expiration is that in the modern world we usually end up with so many cards that it's a lot of work keeping up with it all, especially if you hate bureacratic chores as much as I do. I used to think it was just a stodgy British thing, but the USA is even worse for it. Land of the free, my arse.

Sometimes certain places do not care if IDs are expired. For example me & my girlfriend's banks didn't care when ours were expired but we can also give them our social security numbers to access our checking accounts. The banks might care about IDs being expired if we were opening new accounts. I'm also a regular customer at my bank & I don't need to show ID if a certain teller is there because she knows who I am, me & Cass kinda have crush on her The post office didn't care about my ID being expired when I was picking up an international package that required a signature & ID but I also had the tracking number. There was a time when Our former Rite Aid had a policy about checking IDs for everyone buying cough syrup & they were OK with my ID being expired but it was not a federal policy & I was in my 30s. Walgreens was OK with my ID being expired when picking up prescribed controlled meds like benzodiazepines & stimulants but I still had to give them the name & address. It woulda been different if I was trying to buy Sudafed because it doesn't require a prescription but it's a somewhat controlled substance so they need to type my ID number into the computer system. BTW my ID has never been expired by more than half a year.

The DWP when I was applying for Universal Credit and the polling station when I was last voting both accepted my expired driving licence with my old address on it.

No I don't have a state ID, I live in a country where we have provinces and territories. We've never had states and we never will!!

Although I may be in a state. As in, a state of exasperation.

I wish you can use the photo to ID yourself, pics don't lie. But I hate my last
ID pic, I was sooooooo overweight. I had a passport, I wish I can use if I had a new one, I needed one to get into a nightclub, I didn't have an ID, a passport was faster to get, there was a concert in the nightclub.

The pix on my last couple IDs have been in black & white & lack detailed features. I can pass for most any middle-aged white guy. I do NOT understand how this newer style is supposed to be safer

I wish you can get a new ID online that would be easier for some people like for Autism people that hate crowds & loud place, & people that can't go out.

During Covid the DMV lobby was by appointment only, at least in Vermont. After Covid ended the lobby access didn't require an appointment but we're encouraged to make an appointment online before going which me & Cass did like half a year ago. Our wait time was not bad. This may vary by state but we were able to renew our IDs online once before having to go in person so we need to go in person every 8 years instead of every 4. Address changes in Vermont can be updated online as well if both addresses are in the state. Louisiana used to mail me a sticker to put on back my ID so I would have to tell the person checking my ID to look at the back. That was over 15 years ago though so the newer regulations might have stopped the sticker & started mailing new IDs using the pic on file for the one getting renewed like Vermont does. A side-note, Louisiana's ID numbers have one extra digit than most or all other states which has caused problems for some people when traveling outside the state because the computer systems at some stores & businesses are not designed to record that one extra number. Since Louisiana IDs are different their ID policies may be different as well compared to the rest of the country. I'm just pointing out that ID policies can vary so it's best to check the DMV website for your state.

In Connecticut ten years ago I know someone that turned in their driver's license and they returned a state ID card in exchange by mail.

In the UK there's no such thing as an ID card - they floated the idea but it was abandoned as unnecessary and smacking of control freakery. I think the gov had been planning to make it compulsory. I'm fine with voluntary ID cards, if they're cheaper and easier than other forms of ID.

In the UK passports can all be done online, and even for my first ever passport years ago it was all done by mail. Driving licenses can certainly be renewed online. I was surprised to see that the US is more into making people visit some office or other for many official things. Driving licenses seem to be done that way, and car tax. It was a shock to witness how nasty some of the staff could be too. One of them ended up telling me I'd get deported because my tourist visa had expired, though she was quite wrong because as I told her, I'd applied for a green card and once you've done that it's legal to stay till they make a decision. Quite what qualified her to offer immigration advice I don't know, as we were only there to see about a provisional driving license. All of which underscores the advantages of doing things online for Aspies, and to the general public. The software might cause trouble but it's better than dealing with a human tinpot jerk face to face.
