I got new refrigerator yesterday. While I am generally happy with the new appliance, the unfamiliar sounds that it is producing, albeit of low volume, got somewhat on my nerves. However, they have been completely soothed after reading the instruction manual, which contained the following section:

Understanding Sounds You May Hear

Your new refrigerator may make sounds that your old one didn't make. Because the sounds are new to you, you might be concerned about them. Most of the new sounds are normal
[the manual does not explain abnormal sounds, unfortunately]. The following describes the kinds of sounds and what may be making them.

Then the instruction manual proceeds with the list that includes:
1. the buzzing sound made by the ice maker,
2. the clicking sound made by the defrost timer, thermostat control or refrigerator control (depending on the model),
3. the rattling noises that come from the flow of refrigerant or from the water line,
4. the gurgling sound also made by the refrigerant,
5. the pulsating or high-pitched sound, caused by the high efficiency compressor,
6. the sizzling sound coming from the defrost heater,
7. the popping noise caused by contraction and expansion of the inside walls,
8. and, finally, three unnamed sounds made by the evaporator fan motor, the condenser fan and the drain pan during defrost cycle.

Now, this is what I call a good manual! To give proper credit, the above information has been compiled from Whirlpool Top-Mount Refrigerator Use and Care Guide.

:D :D :D

My fridge died last week while I was on "vacation", so my family is getting a new one. Now we have a little loaner fridge that I kind of like better since I can pour a glass on top of it.

We have an Amana fridge, the thing is so quiet you can barley hear it when it's running. Our 20yr old hotpoint fridge died becasue the condenser coils got so plugged up with dog hair that it no longer did it's purpose which caused the compressor to overheat and burn out.

My new refrigerator was bought by the management of the apartment complex. All tenants are getting new appliances. I also got new stove and dishwasher. The refrigerator is kind of cheap, but it is quieter than the old one, and not rusty, so I am happy.

You know what I would give for a dishwasher?? Me neither, but I hate doing dishes. I have to run the water the whole time because it's either too hot or too cold and I know it's just me because when I complain about it I get looked at funny. >:\

I know what you feel, flamingjune. When I lived with my parents, doing dishes was one of my chores (not everyday, we were taking turns). I begged parents to buy a dishwasher, but to no avail. "We have no need for a dishwasher." Well, the problem was that I couldn't stand in one place for more than 15 minutes, because my feet hurt. And number of plates, pots, pans, mugs, glasses, silverware and other things to wash was always astounding. I suspected that my mother was a proprietor of a secret restaurant hidden somewhere in our apartment. :D It usually took me 45 minutes to do the dishes. Frequently I had to take a break and lie down, because I couldn't bear the pain, knowing that other family members would produce additional dishes at a rate of approximately 4 per minute. I guess my mother thought I was lazy.

Now I have a dishwasher, but never use it. I don't cook, and even if I use a plate and fork, it is much faster to wash them in the sink than put them in the machine. Ironies of life!

Standing too long gives me a weird pain in my side just under my ribs that I've never been able to identify.
I don't understand why people have to use so many dishes when I get by with one cup and maybe a bowl. I really don't understand why they can't put the food left on their numerous dishes into the trash can instead of in the sink, either.

I wish they'd have instruction manuals that good for a lot of other household appliances, cars and so on. Also, wouldn't it be wonderful if life came with such a set of instructions? :)

As for washing up - I got rather sick of it as a kid since I was the eldest of 7 and the wash-ups were humungous. I used to get annoyed when too many dishes were put in the sink at one time as I liked to wash them in stages. My next youngest brother of course put dishes in very fast to make me mad.

that is a good instruction manual. It would be like one of the manuals people could read out loud as part of a stand-up comedy routine. ((I know there's somsone who does that but forget who))

Fridges also make some noise after they have been moved, so some of the noises might die down after a day or 2.

You might be right. I had that fridge for a year now, and it stopped making some noises, and to the rest I got used. ;)
