Today, Charles Bukowski would have been 105 years old!
Let's hear it for the poet laureate of the down and out who could tell you about the despair of poverty, alcoholism, and mental illness (things he personally knew all about), and yet could somehow make it funny.

In the movie "Barfly" Mickey Rourke was starring as Charles Bukoski's alter ego Henry Chinaski. Bukowski had written the movie script and when he watched the movie he noticed that Mickey Rourke in some scenes didn't finish the beer bottles he was drinking. He said: "When alcoholics around the world see that they will laugh at me!"

I own the movie. It was actually my first introduction to Bukowski, years before I started reading him.

Bukowski is actually the reason why I got into reading a few years ago. I was conditioned by the public school system to think reading was painful and boring, but when I heard about Charles Bukowski's work through YouTube I became interested.

Bukowski is one of those rare writers who can make me laugh out loud while reading him.
