My bosses tell me I need more energy when talking to customers (I thought I was masking but apparently not well enough) I greet the customer, ask them how they're doing and if they want to sign up for the stores credit card (they say no) and I start putting their things in the bag.

They told me I need to make more eye contact, and have a more "peppier" voice and more enthusiasm. They mimicked the way I talked and showed me what I was doing.

They say that I need to make the customer excited. They want me to really push the credit card (I ask the customers but I don't push them) They want me to keep pushing even after they say no, and I noticed some customers get irritated when pushed which is something I try not to do.

I have a manger hovering over my shoulder asking me every few minutes did I get a customer to sign up for a card yet, ask them, ask them, ask them. Before the customer can even put their items on the counter she wants me to question why they haven't signed up for their credit card.

I've been having a lot of anxiety now working here, I do my fake cheery customer service voice and I thought I was doing well blending in but this has happened before where a manager tells me I need to be more outgoing. About two years ago I had a manger tell me I need to mask my emotions better and put on a better customer service face.

I am trying really hard, I force myself to make eye contact and I practiced my smile and my small talk but its still not enough they can tell something is "off" about me without me even disclosing it.

I am giving my all but I am not sure how to give them more...anyone else struggle with not being "outgoing" enough for a job?

That store cares more about getting customers to sign up for their credit card than treating their customers with respect. Pushing the credit card too much can make customers frustrated. They have various reasons for not wanting to sign up including some having bad credit that would cause them to be denied & applying would make their score even worse. If this is a bigger store with other departments I would suggest asking management to transfer you to another position that is less customer focused like stocking shelves, unloading trucks, getting carts, or custodial stuff. If that isn't an option I would start looking for another job due to being worried that I'd get fired for not fitting their cashier mold. Also just because this store has a problem with your customer service skills it doesn't mean that other stores will, perhaps stores that want their cashiers to focus on being quick & accurate would be a better fit. BTW I do not associate talking to customers while they are checking out with being outgoing. Outgoing would be being social outside of work like hanging out with managers & employees.
