This is quite normal: tone changes meaning.
But can it replace semantics?

When I was in college, I met my roommate who scolded me with a smile, and I concluded that he was insulting me.
Now my girlfriend says in a text message, "Do you think I'm gluttonous?" With a cute meme. She said she was acting cute. But I think she's implying that I don't like her.

I thought I could get away with this problem by sticking to online communication, but the skirmish I just had with my girlfriend got me down.

So back to the question at the beginning: can tone replace semantics?
