Football is SO popular here in the U.S to the point where it should be considered our national pastime instead of baseball!! !

How did this happen and why is NFL so dominant in the United States?

Is the Super Bowl to blame?

What do you guys think?

Thanks in advance!

NFL Football compared with regular football ("soccer") or rugby is very "American" in it's style. Regular football or rugby players are all around fit in a similar functional way like Navy Seals while NFL players look more like bulked up show wrestlers on steroids. It seams to me like Americans like that kind of bombastic Las Vegas extravaganza.

I think Americans tend to be more aggresive & violent than people of other countries(look at how much of the government's budget is spent on the military & violent law enforcement) & thus Americans appreciate football for the violence ie bulky guys slamming into other guys & some football fans celebrate it by putting on war paint & yelling & snarling like they're rabid dogs.

I don't care for the sport itself but I will admit seeing these husky men is fan service to me. Also the half time show and commercials are a treat.

Doesn't every country have some sort of sport they really like?

They do. The question is why the US really likes NFL Football instead of an other sport. My answear above is that the over the top showbusiness extravaganza appeals to Americans.

I've gotta disagree. I think you're putting the cart before the horse.

The over-the-top extravaganza is a reflection of American society.

Canadian football is a very similar sport, but never really embraced the superficial glitz of American football.
Also, American football was huge long before the glitz and extravaganza took over.

Basically, Yanks like gridiron and they like glitz and extravaganza, so eventually the NFL adopted that look.

Might as well be asking why Canada is so obsessed with hockey. I don't know, and I don't care.

Hooray for ignorance and apathy! :D

If it wasn't for the fact that my own country's national sport has guys forgetting where the puck is because they're too busy attacking each other, I'd 110% agree with you. So instead I'll only agree 100%.

There's an old joke that goes "I once went to a fight and a hockey game broke out".

Although my mom once said she liked watching women's hockey because they tended to be less violent and aggressive. Go figure.

I've watched enough PWHL to know women aren't less aggressive than men, even if the rules on contact are stricter. :P

International women's hockey is stricter still, basically comparable to non-hitting rec leagues in terms of contact.

Controlling for all other factors, women are more prone to head injuries/TBIs than men so the rules almost have to be stricter in that regard.
