In 1930, Spanish painter Elías García Martínez painted a fresco of Jesus Christ crowned with horns titled Ecce Homo or in English "Behold the Man". Over the decades, the paint began to fade and crack so untrained amateur artist Cecilia Giménez attempted a restoration of the painting in 2012. The result was a painting of Jesus deformed into a monkey. The restoration was very polarizing with some finding it funny while the more religious types demanded retribution. There was nothing that could be done so "Monkey Jesus" was here to stay and it became very popular. Its legacy has become an important yet humorous part of art history.

Cecilia Giménez passed away yesterday at 94.
