Background: Our 20-year-old son lives at home and is a full-time high school student with no work history. He is legally recognized as an "incompetent person" due to autism and mental impairment, and we are his court-appointed legal guardians. We are planning to start the SSI application process and need advice on medical evidence and timing.

Current Evidence: Full school IEP evaluations (explicitly state Autism diagnosis).

Our Questions:

1. Medical Evidence & Specialists: What kinds of specialist evaluations does the SSA typically require (e.g., psychiatrist, clinical psychologist, neuropsychologist)? Which type of specialist evaluation matters the most? What specific type of evaluation (IQ, Adaptive Functioning, etc.) carries the most weight?

2. Standardized Forms: Is there a specific SSA form we should have a specialist complete to confirm his diagnosis and functional limitations, or is a standard clinical report preferred?

3. Application Strategy: Should we apply immediately to establish the protective filing date (for backpay) and provide evidence as we go? Or is it better to wait until we have a private specialist evaluation in hand to ensure the initial filing is as strong as possible?

4. IEP Weight: Since he is 20, how much weight does the SSA give to recent educational records (IEPs) versus clinical medical records?

We are concerned about relying on a SSA Consultative Exam (CE) and want to ensure his file accurately reflects his inability to work or live independently. Any advice from those who have navigated adult autism claims would be greatly appreciated!
