Quote:
June 13, 2005 -- People who drink diet soft drinks don't lose weight. In fact, they gain weight, a new study shows.

The findings come from eight years of data collected by Sharon P. Fowler, MPH, and colleagues at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio. Fowler reported the data at the annual meeting of the American Diabetes Association in San Diego.

"What didn't surprise us was that total soft drink use was linked to overweight and obesity," Fowler tells WebMD. "What was surprising was when we looked at people only drinking diet soft drinks, their risk of obesity was even higher."

In fact, when the researchers took a closer look at their data, they found that nearly all the obesity risk from soft drinks came from diet sodas.

"There was a 41% increase in risk of being overweight for every can or bottle of diet soft drink a person consumes each day," Fowler says.

That's because the sweeteners can increase your appetite. I didn't actually read the article, but I don't plan too either.

I read another article like that in our local newspaper, and they said that diet sodas could cause one to be overweight because it causes your body gets confused because you are drinking something, but it doesn't have any calories in it. Something like that, but not exactly. I don't know if I could agree on this one because they could be testing only one type of soda, like only diet Coke or diet Pepsi or something. They should've said which products they were testing.

Maybe it's just because obese people are the most likely to drink diet soda? DUH!! :D

And diet soda doesn't make me crave sweets - it just makes me want more diet soda!

I guess it's a good thing that I generally avoid diet pop. I tend to be very oversensitive to artificial sweeteners, especially in the morning. I once bought a box of Weight Watchers breakfast cereal, only to find out it was LOADED with Splenda the hard way. :skull:

Yes.... I NEED MY COKE!

Err, diet... cola...

Anyway I have a constant stream of diet soda in my blood stream and am not obese. I am pretty controlled about what I eat as far as calories. *shrug*

This is of course not to say diet soda is a good thing to drink but merely that it doesn't seem to be making me FAT. ((I'll probably wind up being a statistic about deit soda causing some horrible disease like bleeding fingernails when I'm 30 or so but that's not what this post was about originally))

And I bet this person will also get a 41% increase of pay, too.

I think I should put out a study:

"Study Shows Health Professionals' Pay Increases Chance Of Greed Developing"

I would say that Fizzy drinks are a contributing factor to weight gain. They are loaded with simple sugars that your body can process really fast and then you have lots of energy and it burns out fast too then you are left feeling tired and fatigued and are not as willing to do activity. I think that the fact that fizzy drinks give you energy also means that your body has alot more energy to process and so the body stores what is not being used and deposits fat around the body.

I think that people who drink alot of fizzy drinks also like normal junk food. And they have less balanced diet of healthy things and instead tend to go towards getting McDonalds which loads you up on bread and fat mostly. So then your body does not get the things from the food that it need to keep a body functioning properly.

So when bodys are not getting the things they need to function properly people feel tired and want to eat more to try and get the things the body needs from the food. So people start eating even more high fat high energy food and it makes them put on weight.

Ok I think I started to go off topic. Can't be bothered starting over so..
