I'm just curious whether an aspie can possibly make a great detective?
Since we are limited by not being able to recognize other people's feelings easily, would that hinder us from forming clever insights in a case.

I remember reading about detective novels and would not have emphasized certain clues as much as the detectives even when they fully explain their reasoning.

I guess it depends. I would make a good detective, as I have a good attention to detail thing. I can notice things others can't, which would give me an advantage.

eh, i don't know, if someone like me were to be a detective i would need a partner, because even though i notice things others wouldn't, i often miss the more obvious things.

I get calls from my friends on a weekly basis asking me to look things up for them. Jealous wives, suspicious husbands, etc. I have excellent data-mining skills - I can find just about anyone without spending a dime. I have the strange knack of being able to identify the source of minor noises and what is causing them. in my possession is a very long range lens and I drive a black SUV.

i'm strangely not a detective

These are just possibilities...

advantages:
good long-term memory
might not get emotionally involved
"video-" or "photographic" memory
pays attention to detail
uses logic
good at being quiet and watchful

disadvantages:
might miss obvious things
may not be able to relate to each person
may act strangely and draw attention
cannot lie
panic attacks

etc., etc.

I think I'd be pretty good, though I agree that a partner might be helpful. I would not make a good criminal, though; I'd look too guilty.

Yes,I think many Aspies would make outstanding detectives given the attention to detail many inherently have.

Thinking like Daryl Zero? Possibly a P.I.?

I have the feeling there are to many difficult courses to go into standard Criminal Justice work and eventually get to be a detective. At least the Criminal Justice program at my college does 911 Telecommunication Dispatch training. That sounds like a multitasking pain in the ass. So I could only really see getting a Private Investigator license or possibly entering a field that could later be tied into Forensics.

A lot of actual detective work involves doing research--usually a strength for aspies.

Problems would be in direct dealing with people, and figuring out motives.

I think we'd typically be better off behind the scenes working in the forensic lab with Abby. :P

I'd have a hard time reading people face to face and understanding their motives and if they were being truthful or not. I'd be more likely to notice a speck of blood on the suspects clothing than their admission of guilt of murder.

There was once a detective bit going on with my cooking class in high school one day, and one of the people that I was "investigating" gave away a clue that I was able to pick up on immediately. When the time to reveal who was the one who did the graffiti on the wall as the "crime" I was the only one at my table to know the one who actually did the "crime" this was all nothing but a classroom learning experience that was fun. For me I probably could though I wouldn't know for sure if I could be a good detective just I guess that I will never know then.
