I had this spur-of-the-moment trip planned last night...

I'd go home after work, catch a little sleep, then drive down to the Bay Area.

Then I got an even BETTER idea!
I'd contact EvilKimEvil and see if we could meet out where she's at! :D

She pm'd me back today and said, "Sure!", and this trip was set in motion.

I just had to get a few things together, drop into town and get my shoes (I wore my work shoes home again from the hospital... I keep forgetting to change), deposit a check, get coffee and gas and leave.

Five hours later I could have been meeting with Kim and enjoying a totally impulsive moment in my life.

For some reason, the person who wrote me this check, though, failed to make sure they had enough funds in the bank to cover it.
Now mind you, this was not a small check. I was depending on having this money in my account (both accounts are from the same bank and they were open today) before I took off. I have money in my account, but I didn't want to carry around this check all weekend.

I know this person is quite capable of keeping money in the bank and definitely earns enough to cover a check like this... I just don't understand why this person would give me a large check and not tell me to hold it for a few days.

Anyway, I missed a great opportunity to get out and meet a new friend, travel.. even if to a place I've been numerous times before... and just get away from home for a bit.

I figure there will be another trip in the future, and I'm planning on not depending on anyone else next time!

Instead, I rented several movies, cooked up a couple of batches of corn tortillas (took one to the E.R. crew at my hospital), and here I am watching a documentary about Jim Croce and posting here.

Well, that's my rant for tonight.

Sorry about that Kim!

banks will do whatever they can to make money. They now make more money for fees, than they do in interest and lending.

Yeah, the larger the check, the longer the wait. I've been stuck for up to 2 weeks to have some biggies (4 figures) clear.

Jeeze... thats why I hate banks. Overdraft is like $25 each time, what I rip off!! I have not had a bank account in years and do better in my opinion without then with. I dont want anything to do with banks at all and the only check I accept at the end of the week is my work pay check. The only time I plan on using a bank someday in the future is for a morgage for my modest future dream home in the woods, small, secluded, out in the middle of nowwhwere.

In this case, the gal at the bank knew who wrote the check and I don't think they did anything to cost this person any fees.
I tried to deposit it in person and was told no... that's it.

The thing that irks me is that I was given a check like this and it should have been covered by funds in this person's bank account.

I've known this person for a long time and I do not believe it was a simple mistake.
This person is out of town on their own little weekend get-a-way, but I talked with them this afternoon about the check and their attitude was, "Oh.. okay.. thanks for letting me know.".. as in "so.. what do you want me to do about it?".
There was not apology, no... "Oh s**t! I made a mistake, I'm so sorry about that!".

Then I had to go on and be the nice guy and say, "Well, I can wait, but I wanted you to know something was up with your account.".

No acknowledgement that they really screwed up... what if I had been depending on this check to pay bills or for my daughter's needs? Actually, I will need this money this month, but at least I have enough in my account to pay rent and utilities.

I guess it's just so damn frustrating when I've been trying to be patient and nice to this person for several years now and she keeps on screwing with me. I just don't want to keep on dealing with the hassles like this when they are not necessary.

I appreciate what you all are saying about the banks.. but in this case.. they actually did her a favor by not taking this through the normal process.
So now I have to wait until she gets back into town to see what's going to happen about the check.
It just sucks. I wanted to do one little thing for myself this weekend and wound up not doing it.
She is out there this weekend having a real fun time not worrying that she stiffed me out of a four-figure sum of money that she owes me and could have paid.

Anyway, being the person I am.. I'll give her the chance to set it straight because I do not want to get the lawyers involved, I do not want to have her name associated with writing hot checks.

Sometimes I wish I could be a prick... a real mean ass.. just once.
In my heart I know I don't want to be, and I like to give people chances... second, third, etc., I just get a bit weary of being taken advantage of sometimes.
It is tiring.
