I've known for a number of years that I'm comforted and relaxed by sounds other people find unnerving.

I'm starting to wonder now if this is an AS trait? I've always found myself soothed by the sound of white noise, industrial sounds - Rhythmic factory noises, chugging machinary, coggs and steam. Think of the soundscape in David Lynch's Eraserhead.

It my be something to do with pitch and frequency, I'm sure. Low droning and humming, heavy sounds, all have a sedating quality to me, while sharp, high pitched noises put me on edge. When I was little, I used to lay with my head on the floor, so that I could listen to the muffled sound of the downstairs washing machine chugging and churning. I used to love the white noise like quality of wind blowing through leaves in the trees.

Anyone have a favorite comfort noise or noises? :?:

I like white noise, low pitched humming and droning and the sound of nails on a chalk board doesn't bother me. But I really hate the noise of crickets, birds, insects etc. Annoys the hell out of me.

I have to put my air cleaner on the maximum setting every night for the white noise. Otherwise I'll be up all night startled by sudden noises that most people wouldn't even notice. I can't sleep without it.

I have a fan that I put on high for white noise to sleep. If I am traveling, then ear plugs work fine.

I love listening to the wind through the trees, the sound of the ocean, falling rain, and the s-l-o-w revving up of an engine every now and then. If the engine is revved to fast, i don't like it.

Some high pitched noises is discomforting and I hate noises like a hammer hitting up against metal or scratching the chalkboard. I find relaxing, calm noises comforting.

White noise is very comforting to me, but more things are annoying to me than not. For example, in English class we're doing these "poetry jam sessions" (teacher's words not mine) and instead of applauding, everyone has to snap their fingers. When twenty five people are all napping their fingers, it's like an aural knife going through my ears. I just sit there, cover my ears and rock back and forth.

I can't sleep without whitenoise. We use a box fan in our room, our son has an air filter that runs all night. Unfortunately this also makes me sleepy during the day. The classroom where I spend some evenings has a fan running all the time, and I have to drink coffee the entire time to stay awake.

I like the sound the gas pump makes when it gets a rhythm to it. I also like banging gardening tools around to make noise. I used to listen to a lot of "ambient" electronica because it has some of the same kind of things, just noises that happen to have a beat to them.

Humming to me is pure heaven, when im scared or anxious I put my thumbs over my ears as tight as possible and press the fingers next to my thumb into my eyes and rock my upper body and hum so its really loud in my head. My family, especially my mum keep stopping me, they find me embarrassing but its so soothing.
Humming high and low, sometimes super high and sometimes quite low.

Music is really important, im listening to the Across the Universe soundtrack on repeat at the moment.

Peacock noises are my most favourite noises ever. I make them all time. I really find it comforting and it cheers me up.
My dog makes wonderful noises as well, those are really calming and comforting.

I like the noise of some fans, anything thats like a hum.

I HATE kitchen noises, they undo everything.

Ah, peacocks :D My parents have peacocks and I always got to hear them. I prefer bobwhite quail myself, but I can still make the peacock noises too.

I love hard rain outside my window.

I like some industrial sound too, but it is quite a particular thing.

I hate rain hitting on my window, had that last night, couldn't sleep. I hear every individual droplet with intense clarity and I can't block a single one out, it occupies far too much of my mind. It's fine when I'm not trying to concentrate on something or when I'm not trying to sleep, but otherwise it's very annoying for me.

I like white noise, whether it's wind and rain or the sound of my fan. I'm also soothed by soft music such as Gregorian chants.
