A few minutes ago you've been direct linked from MSNBC after the Will Freund thing. I dont know how many other news outlets linked you to the wider public before MSNBC, but it's my personal first exposure to the issue.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9883793/

The article states that Will's posts are still on this message board, so the Moderators might look into legal advice about what to do with them, as the stability of the site may become an issue with the increased traffic.

Aaaaaaaaaanyway, you probaby know all of this. The reason why I came here after reading the MSN article is that the article mentions one of Will's posts before the events where he described his health/outlook rapidly deteriorating after a new medication. I've had bouts of depresion in the past, and one of the medications I was put on for that made me extremely physically agressive, and that wasnt part of my personality when I wasnt on that medication.

I've been off meds and dealing adequately for a while now, but others I know are being prescribed the same medication that made me agressive for thier depression+ADHD, etc etc and I was wondering if anyone had read Will's post in question and can relate to me what that medication was.

So, thanks for the data and good luck with the additional attention.

Michael

michael - thank you for the information, and welcome to WrongPlanet. :)

because of the huge amount of traffic, it's difficult to get to the posts to get that information you requested (if it's there). i'll wait until it quietens down and get back to you then, if that's okay.

The medication in question was an antipsychotic - sadly, these can actually trigger psychosis in people if they are prescribed inappropriately

What is all this you're referring to?

I'm unfortunately very aware of that from recent experience. (As if my past experience wasn't enough.)

I have a strong reaction to neuroleptic drugs. I've recently been on one for otherwise-uncontrollable vomiting during a migraine that hasn't wanted to fully go away for a few weeks. It's Promethazine, one of the mildest neuroleptics in existence, and it still has completely messed up my head. Today is the first day (after a few days not being on it) that I'm starting to feel somewhat like myself again.

It does make me hallucinate. I saw my wheelchair roll back and forth without anyone pushing it, I saw faces in the air, I saw books moving around that were not moving around, I saw writing all over my hands and the hands of someone else who was with me, and so on. I do not normally hallucinate at all.

It also takes all the areas of my thinking and spreads them far apart, so that it's almost like grasping at fragmented fluff to try to get anything meaningful. Not only that, but it chops my regular thought-things in half at jagged areas almost. I don't know how to describe it entirely.

It does not tranquilize me at all. In fact it creates a certain kind of fear and agitation. The thing is that the fear and agitation do not necessarily connect to my body. So I feel like everything is very far away, farther than usual, every cognitive difficulty I normally have is amplified, and I have cognitive difficulties that I don't normally have at all. It feels like who I am is being smashed into a corner and something else gets to do everything.

It is very difficult, when on it, to remember that I am not actually depressed. And that I have emotions, they are just in a corner, or rather in several corners, scattered, like everything else. It's like dissociation only more so.

And this is taking it voluntarily. For nausea. On a limited basis. And one of the mildest versions of these drugs in existence. At dosages that are used for nausea. Rather than the larger doses used for psychiatric reasons.

I still became violent sometimes when I looked for a cognitive skill I normally had, and it was just not there. And I couldn't see that it was not there until I tried to use it and the thing I was trying to do did not happen. Which I did over and over again. Instant meltdown. Nasty.

When I took these (was forced to take these) when I was already depressed, when I had no knowledge of what they would do to me, when I didn't understand a lot of the things I understand now, it was much, much worse. I didn't understand where all these things were coming from and I felt like I was just being bounced around and thrown into the background for no apparent reason. When I fought it I sometimes got violent and sometimes just got tired, and there was akathisia making me more violence-inclined in the first place.

It was weird getting a reminder of all this, even from a place as safe and nonthreatening as my apartment, with none of the nasty environment involved that was when I was on them before. This was all with everything pretty much good, except the drug, and this is what happened to me. I know many others react to this class of drugs like I do, and I can only imagine what it did to him.

Good looking out. I never had a psychotic break but I was also prescribed neuroleptics and SSRI's for ADHD, AS, OCD< and depression. That stuff caused akasthesia, my functioning went straight downhill from the time I was on it from 11 to 19. All that time I just thought it was just my problems getting worse, really thought I'd be in assisted living the rest of my life, but a friend in another state ended up telling me about my meds arround that time as well. 6 years later now I've had more than enough friends, am 3 classes away from a BBA in accounting, just under Suma Cum Laude, and am looking at having a lucrative accounting/auditing job in the next few months (my social skills also have gone from absolute crap to barely distinguishable from 'NT'). Crazy to see just how much that stuff can tare someone down though and by that token I really think that unless someone's seeing all kinds of fractals and pretty colors or ticking like mad they flat out shouldn't be on it.

I've always wondered about some of my residents at work because so many of them are on those kinds of meds - are the meds right for them? What level should their functioning really be at? I've questioned it with regards to a few people specifically, but I don't really get taken seriously. NTs figure this stuff was prescribed by professionals - doctors know everything, don't they? So I'm pretty outnumbered but I still bring it up as much as I can.

I could go on and on about this because I have no clue what is going on here.

What I do know is that people have been turning their back on me, and I have been feeling very down. I just thought of a sad story that happened to me a few minutes ago. Unfortunately, it was beyond my control. I did what I could to make myself feel better, but it didn't help.

I think this is a natural feeling for those of us with AS. We try to help ourselves feel better, it doesn't work, and then we wonder what we could have done better to help ourselves.

I honestly wish the phrase, "too late" was not in the English language. It's such a negative phrase. I don't like the sound of it. I wonder why people don't accept me for who I am.

Basically, it's not very nice for others to let things like that go unnoticed.

And then the Associated Press picked up the story and it got very wide coverage.

Alex and Dan were interviewed.
