The WWE's Autism Charity
I hope that this is the right forum. World Wrestling Entertainment is set to host an event that is designed to raise money to find an Autism Cure. I was curious what kind of response this sort of rhetoric was to garner on WP.
I have a feeling you guys are going to agree with me, but I'd rather hold my tongue until someone responds. I certainly don't want to sound arrogant; I am simply nervous to speak first on anything.
pro wrestling is an exploitative racket that routinely sends men (and the occasional woman) to their graves in their 30s & 40s. among the issues:
1. in football or baseball, steroids are performance-enhancing drugs. in pro wrestling, steroids are performance-enabling drugs - the business has completely f-ed up standards for size, so almost everyone is on them.
2. despite being a more dangerous activity than baseball or basketball, wrestling does not have an off-season. this leads to a number of major problems. for instance, painkillers are perhaps even more necessary for survival than steroids, and wrestlers often develop addictions due to the non-stop schedule. the side effects of steroids become magnified for a similar reason - bodybuilders will do "cycles" wherein they use steroids for a period of 12 weeks or so then stop for a similar amount of time, but wrestlers do not have that luxury since they're on TV almost every week. and finally, the higher-risk moves that have been popular since the 80s can cause serious brain damage when used so frequently; this, more than anything else, was what turned chris benoit into a suicidal murderer, as at the time of his death his brain was comparable to that of an 85-year-old alzheimer's patient.
3. wrestlers do not have a union. the above conditions will not even begin to change until this one is fixed, plain and simple.
so this whole jenny mccarthy thing is just another attempt to generate some positive PR for a business that receives little and deserves none.
i used to be a major fan in my teenage years, but i just can't justify supporting this state of affairs anymore.
