I found this while googling Autism Awareness. My friends and family want a charity about Autism to support and I was wondering if this is basically Autism Speaks 2.0 or if it's legit.

8O The ASA's been around decades longer than Autism Speaks, the idea of people thinking Autism Speaks (which is very new) came before everything else is a little alarming.

Personally I prefer AutCom (http://www.autcom.org/) which split off from the ASA when the ASA refused to take a stand against aversives. AutCom has its own problems, but it tends to allow more autistic people into the leadership than ASA does. On the other hand, autistic people are really fighting their way into the ASA leadership more and more over time, although it's still mostly the ones most likely to go along with things who get elected to the high positions. Be aware that ASA might still have the policy of not advocating against any procedure that is considered to be an 'autism treatment', even if it's incredibly harmful or nonsensical. For years and years they let the Judge Rotenberg Center exhibit in their exhibit hall thing no matter how many autistic people and/or parents protested. They might have finally stopped, I don't know. But look all this stuff up before you decide.

I hate the Rotenberg Center...it's evil, especially with the new shockers which are four times as intense as the old ones. What with forced ammonia inhalations and everything it's a wonder that place is still running.

The place is still running because the organizations that send children there do not want it shut down.

What gets me is that the state in which this school is located in (and is allowed to operate in) and the state that send the most students to this school are very liberal states. The same politicians from these states then have the nerve to show disdain and anger at the current Federal administrations tactics on terrorists that they caught.

Frankly, I'm all for independence. I tell Autistic societies to rack off.
