Does anyone here currently play? I have never played but am interested in the game. I understand there's some sort of promotion on in-game for players to sign up new subscribers in order to get experience benefits, maybe someone here would help me get oriented in the game and level up in return for such benefits?
I play. But obviously I am on a European server (steamwheedle cartel) and you would probably join an antipodean server!
I also don't know anything about this promotion you talk about but if you do choose to start a horde character on the European steamwheedle cartel server give me a shout. My character is called Gatinho, he is an orc rogue, on the "horde" side.
I play on a US server there are oceanic ones in the US server block , I'm not sure of the time zones but generally play the afternoon central US time or in the morning central US like from 10 am to maybe 1 PM. A lot of people here really seem to dislike the game and complain about the time sink of it or say it's terribly addictive , but I find it fun but I'm generally considered a casual player. So if you want to you can pm me.
I play WoW it is a descent game but suffers from a few flaws.
Unbalanced classes
Frames per second can drop dramatically for no reason.
Little to no customization
Professions are a bit weak with some profession based items almost impossible to make( I'm talking about you regular alchemist stone)
now you can have mounts from level 30 at 8 gold for the mount and 35 gold for the riding skill
it is a nice game.but has some flaws. I also played conan but that was a beauty but as riddled with bugs like a beehive swarmed with bees
the flaws are that you keep grinding forever , running forever for each quest and running back , getting another one, run back etc. But somehow i am more hooked to wow then to conan because i played the rts series. Also you cant play two morp games at the same time and keep paying for them , one is enough for me

sorry for been rude sometimes or emotionless or hurting feelings ; i got as for something
I've got a 70 hunter + 70 druid.
Tanked everything up to brutallus in sunwell on the druid, and done up to kalecgos on my hunter.
so pretty much, I have a good idea of how most the game is.
Downsides? you have to put up with other people who may or may not be idiots or very rude, it can be a time sink, if you get angry easily you may "nerdrage" when you pvp (i know i do XD, so I generally stay away from it, although recently i've had fun doing 2v2 arena with a resto druid friend of mine)
upsides? theres lots of really cool people you can meet, and its a pretty fun game, almost endless playability so it won't get boring. The leveling isnt that bad, and whoever said "its not very customizable" earlier didn't know much about user interface mods. There are lots of downloadable modifications you can get which allow you to customize the user interface. mine are always really simple, showing as few buttons as possible.
I've been thinking of quitting the game though, but i'm probably just going to wait after the new expansion to see if i really wanna leave.
If you do decide to join, I would try to get on an oceanic server or a PST server, since you live in australia. If you decide to raid once you level up/gear up, you may find it difficult to find a raiding guild though =/, anyone between australia and alaska is kinda screwed as far as good raid times go, in my opinion. (i got lucky of course :b)

Gonna continue on my previous post by posting my opinion on these bad points.
Unbalanced classes- all classes can't be the same, they're kinda like rock-paper-scissors. really, as long as you know what you're doing, you should put up a good fight against any other class.
Little to no customization- theres tons of customazation in interface mods, and all sorts of other mods (covered in last post)
Professions- it's so easy to make gold on the game these days, these items are a joke. I'm an alchemist on the game, and the alch stone is pretty easy to make, as are the shattered sun exalted alch stones, you just can't be broke.

Its fun but can be highly addictive if you're not careful. I say that because I'm addicted to it. lol.

As a new player, I just wanted to provide a quick glossary to Atosmk's post:\
TANK: To have sufficient defenses (either armor or hit points, commonly both) that you can safely draw the attention of ("aggro") a group of monsters ("mob"), so that your companions can fight them safely. (In my group, which consists of my cohusband, our wife, and myself, his warlock frequently uses his demon minion to "tank" monsters we wouldn't ordinarily fight.)
PVP: Player-versus-player combat, as opposed to fighting monsters. If the combat is between members of the same side ("faction" - Alliance or Horde), it's usually a duel, fought for honor points, and no one dies. Combat between members of opposing sides can apparently be to the death. (At least, the last time I entered Goldshire after seeing an announcement that it was under Horde attack, I saw several dead Horde lying about...)
2V2: Similar to PvP, except that it involves two players per side, and is fought in an arena. Many honor points can be at stake here.
One important note: If you don't care for PvP combat, you can join a server that only supports roleplaying; also, if you find that for one reason or another you are on a PvP server, you can disable PvP combat, and others will be unable to engage you. (I once had a couple of Horde dancing around me for almost ten minutes once, trying to get me to fight - maybe if they'd selected Common, rather than Orcish, for their in-game language, I might have understood their taunts...)

I'm actually a guild leader along with my husband. We run a mature gaming community in WoW and Warhammer: Age of Reckoning. We're mostly older folks and couples. I'm one of the youngest at 22.

My "resume"
WoW:
70 Troll Priest
70 Orc Hunter
70 Tauren Druid
60 Night Elf Priest
60 Draenei Shaman
WAR Elder Closed Beta Tester, plan on playing:
Dwarf Runepriest
Empire Bright Wizard
Empire Witch Hunter
High Elf Swordmaster
In response to the OP:
Trust me and just wait on Warhammer. It's like WoW, but brand new (so you won't be the only new guy), and so much better.

A couple revisions:
2v2's are not fought for honor, they're fought for arena points and arena rating. The higher your rating is, the more points you get, and the better arena gear you can buy.
pvp- always to the death when its with the opposing faction. also, you only get honor when your opponent is the opposite faction.
And as for your side-note, if you're on a PvP or PvP-RP server, you are always flagged for pvp combat in contested territory, and you can only unflag in your factions own territory, or in shattrath city.
Only on a PvE or RP server can you unflag/flag any time you want, any place you want.
My druid is on a PvE server, and I hate it >.<, as soon as I stopped raiding on them and started raiding on my hunter on a PvP server, I quit playing my druid.
On PvE servers you can quest and level in peace and PvP on your own terms.
I went RP to PvE to PvP to RP-PvP back to RP. Non-PvP servers are hands down my favorite since I can PvP on my terms, not those of some guy that thinks killing someone 20 levels lower than you is a fun thing to do.
