Girl who was tased gets probation for resisting deputy

Quote:
Sarah Lundy | Sentinel Staff Writer
11:53 AM EDT, September 17, 2008

An 11-year-old Orange County girl who punched a deputy at her school and was zapped with a Taser in March pleaded no contest today to a charge of resisting arrest without violence.

A judge then sentenced the girl to one year of probation and ordered her to write a letter of apology to the deputy and continue to receive counseling.

The altercation happened at Moss Park Elementary School.

Administrators called Deputy Donna Hudepohl, the school's resource officer, to the classroom because the 11-year-old was being disruptive.

The deputy tried to get her under control and she refused to comply. She pushed the deputy in the chest.

As she flailed about, she hit the deputy in the face, causing a bloody nose. That's when the deputy zapped her with a Taser.

The Orlando Sentinel is not publishing the student's name because of her age.

Her attorney, Mark Lippman, said the family is now looking into whether they want to pursue civil action against the sheriff's office for use of the taser.

This makes me angry. What sort of coward uses a taser on an 11 year old girl?

Ladycops, apparantly. I'm usually the first one to defend cops on use of force, including tasering, but I agree that this is ridiculous. If nothing else, what does it say about your police force when they can't even subdue an angry elementary school kid without resorting to a weapon? I will say though, what the hell kind of parenting produces a child that punches a cop at 11?

Why not? The cop was attacked. He has a right to defend himself. His choices were to beat her into submission, shoot her dead with his 357 magnum, use pepper spray or use the taser. He made the right call. Beating her and shooting her causes injury. Using pepper spray will harm everyone in the class. A taser does the job effectively and without risk to her or others.

In florida, every public school has at least one permanent cop. Teachers are not allowed to spank kids or even send them to the principals office any more. Cops are there for discipline.

She is a CHILD and without risk to her or others?! Tasing hurts people, and can make people DIE! and this is a child! and what ever gave you the idea that it would be ok for a police officer to "beat into submission" or shoot a child?!

#1) the pig in question was not male, but female.

#2) the kid is eleven years old......are you out of your mind? to use a police taser on a child for any reason at all is child abuse, and I hope they shove the taser up the pigs ass.

Of course you do realise that any adult male physically fit enough to be a member of the police service is more than adequately euipped to restrain a child (or in fact most adults) in a totally calm and non-violent manner, dont you? There was no option to "shoot her dead" or "beat her into submission" at all. At no point was the officer in danger at all. His life was never threatened. This man is utterly pathetic, and should never be allowed to raise his own children. Ever. Period. What would happen when Cretin junior decides he doesnt want his bath?

"GET IN THE BATH SON"

"NO"

"GET IN THE BATH OR I WILL BE FORCED TO FIRE UPON YOU"

As I read thread after thread about idiot american police tasering everything that moves, it becomes increasingly apparent that police training in the states is utterly inadequate for dealing with anything other than full-blown gangster-style warfare. (Which I observe it fails to prevent.) It increases my confidence in our own police. Mismanaged, underfunded, and not up to par, but at least they can arrest people without half-killing them first.

TRAIN YOUR POLICEMEN BEFORE THEY KILL SOMEONE.

Absolutely. And therein lies the cause of the problem as the officer involved appears to be an adult female. Adult females cannot restrain teenage children as effectively as males. That's nature for you. However, due to political correctness, we have to pretend they can. When you attempt to legislate away the laws of nature, they bite back.

Most of the over-reaction violence I experienced and saw as a child was from adult females (teachers and parents) towards the children, probably for this reason. If they'd had tasers back then, I'm 100% sure the exclusively female teachers I had at junior school would have delighted in using them on us for such crimes as holding a pencil incorrectly or not drinking our milk fast enough.

Actually, I have some sympathy for the police person. She was punched on the nose hard enough to draw blood. What sort of world is it where we teach our children that they can punch someone on the nose and get no retaliation. We all have a right to defend ourselves and the initial assault was clearly done by the child. Could the child be one of those nasty bullying types who has learnt to get what they want by bullying and hitting out at every opportunity? If so, she deserves what she got.

You missed this from your report:

According to the Orange County Sheriff's Office, the girl, identified as Thaliamar Jiminez by Local 6 News, pushed another student into oncoming traffic, and the student who was pushed reported the incident to a teacher.

This girl sounds like a real nasty piece of work. My sympathy is for the normal, not so violently aggresive 11 year olds who are forced to share a class with her.

I have felt the effects of a taser, they hurt so bad, they make you feel like your about to die from pain. The fact that she was 11 years and a taser was used is amazes me because 11 year olds are not that strong most adults can restrain an 11 year old with retaliative ease. The cop used unnecessary force in this case, the taser was not needed.

11 year old children who initiate violence can also be lying bastards, too. And far more likely to be so due to their lack of accountabilty when compared to the enforcement agencies. The reporters have to put that in to cover their backs. Sure, the agencies do lie in court, but 99% of the lies in court are told by the guilty trying to save their sorry skins and avoid responsibility for their selfish, often sociopathic behaviour.

Let me make my position clear: I am not pro-taser. I despise police brutality as much as any brutality. I want police who lie in court to be strung out to dry. I do not think violence should be used against anybody, especially children, unless it is the absolute last resort. This is not the brutalisation of an innocent, though. The girl in this case was not the victim, she was the perpetrator. At every level, she chose to escalate the level of violence and intimidation of others. This was not spur of the moment. She spat at teachers etc etc. She was warned about the taser yet probably is so used to getting her way through threats, she didn't think anyone would dare use it against her precious self. She got what she deserved.

11 years old is a good age to understand about responsibility for your actions. Hopefully, the girl involved may think twice before pushing other children into the road. "Innocent child killed after being pushed in front of truck" is a far more horrific headline.

Meh. Female, male, makes no odds. If you cant physically restrain a child then you are pretty f****d dealing with anyone bigger.

agree with alot you said...however 11 is not a typical age of accountability legally..and for good reason....kids make stupid mistakes because they are still learning. I wasnt simply talking not know what I was talking about....my mother was a cop as was my latest stepfather...so I know the little things that go on that most people do not know about. in fact by several officers admissions, perjury is in fact up in the 99% you quoted that criminals are in. yes, criminals lie, but so do police....what does that say about police?

but cops are criminals.. I wouldn't mind punching a cop.. fuuck.

Cops are cowards nowadays.. They use their weapons to feel powerful, instead of their intellect.
