In my General Psychology class, my professor asked me to speak on Asperger's Syndrome. I agreed, and during the speech, I asked who had heard of it. Very few hands went up. Afterward, I asked who had heard of Autism. Practically every hand in the room went up.

Many people in my school have heard of it, even if they don't understand it. People don't seem to particularly care about it and I don't mind talking about it.

Most of my class knows and understands some of my issues, but some of the people are all like "You have two arms and legs and you aren't mentally ret*d, so you're normal!"

Including some staff. Ugh.

I personally don't get why people say you're an aspie or have autism and you're suddenly not "normal". I don't want to be told I'm not normal! :?

Well, it would be nice to consider myself normal, but I try to make people aware of it.
(It could very well be the ticket out of that idiotic institution for me...they should know by now that they're not doing a thing for me.)

My teachers are all sympathetic, they have had training on how to deal with disabled children from all of the autistic spectrum. I've been honest with all my friends, and they trust me more for it. Does that not happen in america or where-ever you guys are from? its standard over here in scotland. Its a law that they can't be bias or discriminate you, as long as its on a peice of paper they have to make special arangements for you.

Oh, it goes far beyond school. Practically everyone I know is ignorant to it. I haven't told any other students at school yet, I'm not taking the risk of getting stick for having something wrong with me that no one can see. I, myself, take pride in not being normal. I know I think differently than "normal" and I quite like it that way.
The main problem, I find, is that because people can't /see/ anything wrong with you, they assume you're "normal". I've never been normal in my /life/. I know eventually people at college will know what's "wrong" with me and I can only hope they take it in their stride and continue ignoring me - I like it that way.
As for my family, on the other hand, I'd actually prefer them to address it more. But I suppose a person cannot have everything.

People in my school pretty much don't know it exists, I'm too ashamed to admit that I have it, and no one else has it.

The people who know what it is and have a general understanding of it are respectful of it.

At work... well, that's an entirely different story.

There is only one other person in my school with AS, the rest used make fun of me, although most of them are OK these days, which is always nice :)

I suppose its coz I am getting better at social skills.
