Someday soon I hope to get up the guts to ask the questions I would like answered, but for now it's just "hello".

Don't get your hopes up, and do not trust anyone on this forum. Maybe they'll let you into their exclusive little club, or maybe they won't. Don't be surprised if you feel just as isolated as you did before.

Hi! Welcome to WP, enjoy your stay. Remember, its the internet. No need to feel shame, anxiety, worry, or really any hint of restraint unless you really want to. So ask away and enjoy.

A) I haven't noticed that problem
B) That post certainly didn't help anyone feel included.

Well, you can't guarantee that people will give them a fair go. What's wrong with letting people know what they could be letting themselves in for?

Because you chose to do that instead of actually try to make a newcomer welcome, thus exacerbating the very problem you warned against.

My apologies; I'll wait until I'm feeling less negative and cynical before posting anything else.

BPalmer seems to be predicting that the new person Umbie will not be accepted, I see no reason why this will be true. I hold the view that we should "live and let live here". My advice to BPalmer is that you might not like everything about a fellow resident of WP but try to be a good citizen of WP and make a point of "live and let live".

My advice to Umbie is, try to relax and do not expect a voice from on high which gives you all the answers you are likely to be searching for right now. On WP you will find a range of people with different life experiences, some have a lot to say others very little.

If you want the answer to some questions such as 'does a link exist between eating fish and autism' or 'how do I bake my own bread' then I suspect that you will be able to find it from one of our resident experts, while some other questions such as 'is there a god' may be more difficult to get a single answer for.

I predict that you will get some answers to some of the questions you already have, and to some questions which you have not thought of yet. You may also meet others like yourself and others who differ from you here. I would say that WP can be like life, you get out what you put in.

Not predicting such, but simply pointing out the possibility of that happening. Anyway, I don't want to cause any further upset.

Have you ever been to the religion forum? Theres a lot of answers, just not much consensus...

And yeah, if you are expecting WP to fill some hole in you, you will feel just as lonely. Same as if you tried to fill the hole with money, sex, drugs, eating disorders, self mutilation, or escaping into a fantasy world. But, if you are looking to come here and to have a good time with a group of people who, while they may not get you, are odd and realize what its like to be odd (and in some ways that might be frighteningly similar to your own), then this is a pretty good place.

Most people are respectful, and the topics are more eclectic then at ye-old-generic-web-forum.

Very true, I should have chosen my words with more care. What I was meaning to say that while many answers regarding the question of 'does god exist' are likely to appear here on WP, I expect that no consensus on this question will exist'. But on another point who is the best citizen on WP to ask for advice on how to bake bread ?

Umbie, welcome to WrongPlanet.

You might find that you get some answers by reading responses to other posters' questions - many of us have amazingly similar experiences. Otherwise, you can ask, either publicly or privately.

I do sincerely hope you find acceptance, comfort and answers here.

Welcome to Wrong Planet Umbie! ( Please ignore the negative people; the meaningful contributions of the kind and decent people here far outweigh them. It is not 'an exclusive little club' and you are very welcome here- I hope you find the support that you are looking for.)
