Though I have been a member of WrongPlanet since November, I have never used the chatroom. Tonight, I logged into it and noticed my name was simply listed as anon #. I can't figure out how to use my name in there rather than the anon. Can someone help me with telling me how to set up a username in there. Thanks.

Yea. I'm a regular at the chat room. But only visit the wrongplanet website about once every 8 months.

The internet chat runs using a system called IRC (internet relay chat). At some stage I would recommend downloading a IRC client so you can get into the world of IRC chat :P if your interested.

I hate to burst your bubble but that does not work

a) the true command is /ctcp <name/channel> ping and all it does is tells you how long it takes for messages to travel from you to them

b) pings DO NOT reveal country

you have a lot to learn about IRC :P

not straight but believe me i can get country's with ping :P then u just measure it distance ..for example 300 in America...and about 70 France

It's much easier to grab an IP address and to trace where it comes from :P

(provided you're not like me and mask it)

For people wanting another command: try /me <message> out

New people to IRC: you simply type any commands in the same box you chat to people, its just preceded by a /

a list of common IRC commands for the chat

/me <message> performs an action (eg *Pikachu does something)
/query <nickname> sends a private message
/join <#name> joins another room
/notice <#room name/nickname> sends a notice to a user or the whole room (you don't need this often, it's for reference)
/ignore *!*user@isp.com or *!*user@unaffiliated/user ignores someone, useful if they're trying to provoke
/part <#name> parts a chatroom
/quit <optional message> quits the chat, with an optional message if you desire
/nick <newname> as I described in the first post, changes your nickname
/away <reason> marks you as away, to remove this type /away on it's own, although it's rarely used

That's about everything

---

On a side note I thought I better mention this, the ops have the power to both silence and ban

if you see * <op's nick> sets mode +b %*!*@isp.com (or %*!*@unaffiliated/user) then it is a silence and not a ban
if you see the same but without % then it is a ban

Just thought to mention that to avoid confusion between the two
