i was just wondering if anyone has had or knows about the short or long term effects of bacterial meninjitis or the deadly kind if you will, i had it at 2 and i remember it well other than what i have blocked from memory anyway i have some theories on it as it is a relativley lesser known affliction but i have been lucky enough to go through school but real life has been difficult to say the least without diminishing everyone elses experiences, but please if you have any more info let me know thanks.

This is a pretty good write up on the effects from WebMD, one of my favorite medical sites.

My ex was born with it, and almost died. He had dyslexia, ADHD, and some miscellanous learning disabilities. I remember him saying that the meningitis caused those things, although I don't know if it's true.

Brain damage to various extents many times. Which goes along with my hypothesis about ASDs (and other disorders) being triggered by brain damage pre-/natal/ or perinatally. In your case, probably perinatally.

What were you like before that? Have your parents told you of any extreme behavioral changes following your infection?

thanks guys well they try to ignore it ever happened which keeps me from any sort of help which i do prefer mostly and well i have to remind them of it but on one hand they sort of abuse me in various ways and on the other they saved my life but i went into it late and was in the hospital for a while and 5 + spinal taps but i am physically athletic but i must be mental the only thing that can explain everything is from this time of life and yes i was differant most defenitly before and after but how i dont know except the obvious free spirit before and introverted shell but i still get around hah, sorry for the run on sentence i consider myself as smart but cant cut it in the real world so that is my major problem now...

...my theories are yes brain damage, how to prove that and why i dont know like i said i got other problems heh but my point is that the brain damage occurs not so much on the cortex which is less vulnerable than some of the smaller intricate pit brain organs...so im all brains and no sense...in fact i cant make sense out of change...i cant tell if im makeing up excuses which is what most people would say or legitimate complications but its the only thing that has explained my life so far. anyway thanks.

To my knowledge (not that that's a lot on menigitis), if the meninges or if any part of the brain is infected and inflammed, brain damage is a high risk.

I don't know what they could do now, other than the aid most Aspies get. Once the infection's gone, I don't think there's much else to be done. Just work with what you've got. Like all of us. :)

But I agree, that was most likely the trigger of your AS and whatever comorbid disorders, if any, you have. I recommend reading up on individual lesion studies as well as past outcomes of meningitis and see what you can make of it.

Btw, what kind of meningitis did you have? Bacterial or viral?

bacterial but im not sure of what type of bacterial...

and in terms of a near death experience it seems to have taught me that while life is dear, it is a long hall hopefully rather than living for the day whatever that means its cliche. i could be wrong of course and nothing that complex can be simplified in a phrase...

It's my understanding that bacterial is the more serious of the two types and the more likely of the two to cause brain damage. Though, again, I don't know much more than that.
