This is obviously not directly related to AS or autism, but, I still think it would be welcomed by some WP members, since we all usually experience extra sensitivity to glare:

I feel as if I should be replying to some threads in this forum. Too busy to do that right now though, so I'll get to those later.

I just wanted to share that in the USA, Target (the discount retailer) has some great polarized sunglasses for $15 price, by the brand "Merona", (which is probably exclusive to Target). They offer at least 4 styles of wrap-around frames (they have other types of frames too, but those don't offer as much coverage), and at least 2 hues of lenses - I suggest the brown lenses because they have lighter tinting than the green ones do.

Put in some earplugs before you enter the store.

Fishing stores also tend to have decent quality polarized lenses for a good price.

I've been on a rather fruitless search for prescription polarized sunglasses with big lenses that wrap. In this respect, females have all the luck it would seem. Unfortunately most sunglasses don't fit my fat head. Goggles would be ideal I thought, especially because I'm prone to lose things. But though I've looked at a lot of goggles, none of them appear to be what I'm looking for.

You need to check out the frames that are marketed to skiiers, fishermen, and shooters since they require wrap around glasses that protect the sides from light and debris. Most are never found at in your optometrist office since the market is so specialized. Usually they have to be custom ordered. There are varieties that let you pop out the lens and substitute for a prescription lens. And others have an inner frame that hold a prescription lens behind the polarized lens.

Actually, no, but I do remember seeing a lot of those there too. If the lenses are brown and polarized, they're good.

Wrap-around, sport-frames are shaped to fit the general curve of one's face (to reduce the gap between the glasses and your face). You typically see them marketed to cyclists and other athletes.
This is just an example of how they curve:

I was at Wal-nut a couple of weeks ago looking for polarized sunglasses. They had 4-5 wrap-around styles that fit over perscription glasses. I almost bought a pair just to wear by themselves. They also had the kind that clip onto perscription glasses.

1) I don't do Wal-nut
2) I'd prefer to have only only thing to keep track of instead of two

Thanks anyway.

I braved Target to see what was on offer and got a pair similar to the one pictured. I wonder if there are degrees to polarization because these don't quite do it for me on a sunny day. Still, they're a perfect cheap solution for indoors.

I got the ones with earpieces that are much thinner than the ones I posted a picture of here (I need them thin so that I can clip on my rear-view mirror). They're working great for me, just like the pair I've been wearing, which I bought 2 years ago. I'm sold on those brown, polarized lenses. They allow me to do things outside even in bright sun, and they make everything easier to see; they're even good for driving in heavy rain conditions. I'll probably go back for another pair, to have in case I lose these.

I'm with you - I am confined to carrying around (and constantly misplacing) two pairs of RX glasses. One clear and one polarized. I tried Transitions but ended up looking like a female Al Davis. (Obscure American football reference.)

Unless I want to get lasik surgery...hell no...I am resigned to this life... 8O

As far as best Rx sunglass options - Ray-Ban has really nice rx lenses and frames. My husband - who's head is fat - has these nice Ray Charles looking shades that are kind of black rubbery. Very durable and he just pops a neoprene holder on them and they are as good as goggles.

Next up? Now I'm dealing with bifocals - next pair of rx sunglasses will probably be bifocal. 8O

Hmmmm...you got me thinking. having an "ah, ha" moment.

So, you can get "Cheap Sunglasses" and use them for close distances or inside. I never thought about that. My vision isn't awful but I need rx for driving and watching tv or movies or reading signs. I don't need them for just wandering around the yard or neighborhood or eating al fresco or whatever. Talk about an epiphany!

I get my sunglasses at walmart, mirrored aviators for about $15.
Would like to get the wrap around one Col. O'Neil wears on Stargate SG1
but have never been able to find any.
