a lot of developers wouldn't have any funding to spend on making a decent game,if it wasn't for the crap, bugged mega casual ones they produce which mostly guarantee them good sales, the fight over who's getting the big licences are forcing even smaller developers [the ones not afraid of experimenting outside the ordinary] to close or merge.
and console gaming isn't at fault,it used to provide some of the most hardcore and most difficult games around, save points were rarely heard of [not like how they're used today],easy level wasn't easy, and there wasn't the same pressure from gamers and developers to make games look as ultra realistic as they do today because the technology wasn't around back then [megadrive/genesis and earlier],it was all about the games then.
Today, people are supposed to have shorter attention spans, are busier, and so there's a bigger market for strongly casual games that are quick to get into and can be left down at any time.
Gaming is becoming like the film industry where its all about the money, they've found a majority who will buy their madagascars, their teenage mutant ninja turtles, their happy feets, their party games,it doesn't matter that they shove it out bugged-to meet deadlines, because they will still buy them though a lot of these games are of films aimed at families/young children so parents are going to buy them whether they're complete crap or not if it's what their child wants.
