North Korea Stages Underground Nuclear Test

Quote:
North Korea Stages Underground Nuclear Test

by The Associated Press

“The nuclear test is a serious threat to peace and security on the Korean peninsula, in Northeast Asia and in the world.”

Statement from South Korea's presidential office

NPR.org, May 25, 2009 · North Korea carried out a powerful underground nuclear test Monday — much larger than one conducted in 2006 — in a major provocation in the escalating international standoff over its rogue nuclear and missile programs.

Oh No ! Does anyone have an idea of the explosive yield of the test. I hope that it is very low like the last time when they could not get their bomb to work.

The last test suggested to me that their bomb had malfunctioned, I am glad that it is very hard to make an atom bomb.

Russia's defense ministry has estimated at 10-20 kilotons, according to the link. So yes, this one actually worked.

Ah yes. A very poor, unstable, militant, isolated country packing 15 kiloton bombs. What could possibly go wrong?

Hmm, better than a very large bankrupt and much despised country that is a dying superpower with 20,000 nukes i guess.

As much as I don't like the idea of North Korea with nukes, what can anyone actually do about it? The only military option I can see is airstrikes. But China and Russia really aren't going to let something like that happen. We just get to sit on it until something worse happens, I suppose.

No noise. And we won't invade if we make war on N.K. We will nuke them.

Oh dear, 10 to 20 kTon is in the low end of the range for an atom bomb but it is a bomb which works, I think that the first US bomb Pu based bombs were about 20 kTon.

I just hope that the leader of North Korea understands that dropping one on some other country is going to be a very bad idea.

I think that we need to tell Pyongyang that we have a 100 nukes aimed at them and we will use them if they nuke another country without just cause.

invade? what for?
everyone needs to forget about the whole "freedom" sherade, by now we know the war on iraq/afghanistan were never about that.
re-set our minds to how its supposed to be.
NK makes nukes. does not warrant invasion.

I say we go for the cheapest solution, bribe Remy Martin to taint their next shipment of Luis XIII headed to Kim, hopefully get somebody reasonable in his place...
