Review: Mozart and the Whale: An Asperger's Love Story

Is there such a thing as a soul mate; another person who is destined to be with you? For Jerry Newport and Mary Newport, the answer is ‘yes.’ Mozart and the Whale: An Asperger’s Love Story details the relationship of two Aspies (individuals with Asperger’s Syndrome, a form of Autism) who fall in love at first sight. This touching story chronicles their life of misunderstanding and loneliness leading up to and beyond the moment they met, which changed them both forever.
Mozart and the Whale is a compelling tale about the power of love and its ability to overcome everything, even among two individuals with Asperger’s Syndrome. But the story it tells is something to which we can all relate. It provides hope to those of us who have been lonely our entire lives. Perhaps we will one day be able to experience true love, when we least expect it.
Jerry is a brilliant mathematical autistic savant who drives a taxi for a living. Mary is a talented musician who has used her gift working in places such as Radio City Music Hall and Hollywood Bowl. The two meet each other in an interesting sequence of events that explains a lot about who they truly were before they found one another.
The story’s narration alternates between Jerry’s and Mary’s voice, telling the story from both sides of the relationship. It’s quite enlightening to hear the differing perspectives and feelings of these two unique individuals.
Both characters have quirks that make the story that much more interesting. But these quirks oddly attract each other. For example, Mary becomes oddly fascinated by Jerry’s answering machine message, which mentions the names of his pet parakeets. Jerry and Mary both share the common interest of keeping pet birds.
While the two characters are similar in many ways, Mozart and the Whale illustrates the different set of problems males and females with Asperger’s have with relationships. On one side is Jerry, who has not been in hardly any relationships, during his life. On the other side is Mary, who has been in many relationships, but has been consistently hurt by men who do not like her for who she is. The book effectively portrays these differences in a way that relates Jerry and Mary’s experiences to the general experiences of most males and females with Asperger’s, which, interestingly enough, seem to follow along the same divisional lines.
Telling you too much about the story would ruin the many surprises it contains, but rest assured that this is a must read for anyone who plans on or knows someone who plans on falling in love at some point in his or her life. Even if you’ve seen the movie, the fresh approach of this novel makes the Newports’ story worth a second look.

Mary and I appreciate all comments about our movie and book. The paperback edition of MATW will be out on November 6th, 2007 and should be available at most major retail booksellers and online sites. It is a bit cheaper than the hardcover.

I've never felt so close to understanding anyone as much as I've felt close to Jerry and Mary Newport while reading their story. If anyone could help me to know how I might have a chance to meet them (or at least contact them), I would greatly appreciate it!
I'm looking forward to seeing the movie. However, I'm sure the movie cannot be anywhere near as good as reading the book. |

(User Info | Send a Message) | | When I had seen this film and realized that it was based on a true story I thought, that many people with Aspergers and the rest of those in the Spectrum are capa ble of having a loving,caring relationship(s) despite the problems which can be faced overall. Also, I'd like to point out that the film does not present those of "us" in the spectrum as being a bunch of dummies or such but, potrays people in the
Autistic Spectrum in a most accurate,postive light. I shall therefore choose to read the book to learn more of what went on.

I had to turn the movie off the first time after fifteen minutes--it was too confronting, and I'm in the midst of dealing with "other's perceptions" of Asperger's; I've heard it all, from "drug addict," to "crazy" to "can't get along with others". And this is from folks in an academic context!
But back to the movie: a couple of days after first trying to watch it, I tried again, and couldn't turn it off. I loved it. I cried. :) It stays with me.
I first leaned about Asperger's when I fell in love with someone who had been diagnosed. I'd never heard of it, so I read about it.
While reading about *him* I was like, "uh-oh!"
Seriously, though, it was more profound than that. It totally undermined my world. It was another year before I could tell another person (an academic Dean who didn't get it); and another year after that before I could get diagnosed (I was in Sept 2006).
For decades, I knew I had lost something in my late teens and early 20s that I didn't know how to recover. I'd explored all the self-help, psychological fads and even some real psychiatric things in order to try to find what had been lost.
And then we found each other. As I watched him from across the room, and listened to him singing to Debbie Gibson while playing with his Performa, one day--that's when the realization struck me: he is more like me than me.
What I mean is this: he was more like me than the "me" I had become after four decades on the planet.
Just being in a room with Chris was the most extraordinary experience I've ever had, in terms of being with another person. Just being around him. He set me free.
That was 2.5 years ago, and I'm still amazed and grateful. Chris isn't here with me now; he told me it would be five years before he was ready (he's still in his 20s, with a lot to experience before he wants to "settle"). So it'll be another year and a half before we reconnect again. But his spirit is always with me, casting doubt on the moments when I think I feel lonely.
I hope more stories and movies like Mozart in the Whale get into the minds of neurotypicals. Then perhaps fewer people will have to spend decades trying to be normal in all the wrong ways.
Not anymore! I'm free. :)

(User Info | Send a Message) http://www.chelbiscreations.com | | As the mother of three Aspie boys (and the daughter of another) it was very emotional for me to watch the film based on their story. Having grown up in Spokane WA (where the movie was filmed) it was highly annoying for my husband to listen to my repeated "I've been there!"
The portrayal of Jerry was so similar to how my 12 yr old is (shy, uncomfortable) that I was physically shaken. I could see the triumphs my son will have and also the struggles he will endure through Jerry. My younger son's are both more like Mary- outspoken and fearless.
I recommended this film to everyone I know so they can better understand why my children do the things they do and I have had several come back to me much more informed and understanding.
How great of the Newports to share their love and their story to help the world better accept that NT no longer means normal. |

(User Info | Send a Message) | | Although I like to movie, I do not recognize myself in either of the main characters (I did not read the book). The first time a psychologist suggested to me I could have Asperger’s syndrome, I could not believe it. Not because of the DSM-IV criteria, but because of TV interviews I have seen of other aspies. I had to read several (auto)biographies of aspies, before I could finally feel resemblance with another one. Maybe it is my aspie behavior in dealing with generalizations too that made it difficult for me to recognize. Another reason could be that I do not have any problems with my senses, so I cannot imagine how someone gets upset by e.g. noises. Anyway, the movie shows clearly that aspies can have a relationship (something that is still disputed by many) and that they differ from each other as much as NTs do (I hate people that want to label you and put you in a box). |

(User Info | Send a Message) | | At first, I didn't understand it, too many types of autistic people in it. I think it bothered me to see extreme autism side by side with asperger's because it shakes my belief that asperger's is not a "syndrome", but a difference. (It bothers me that I have so little understanding of autism as well, as if I'm so myopic towards Aspergers at the expense of autism as to miss the forest for the trees.)
And I really didn't identify with Mozart or the whale until the scene with the metal clanging. Then I felt it. After that, I was sucked in to the story. I won't go into details, but I'll say that there was an unnerving resonance in the constant breakups. :(
A good movie overall, glad to have seen it. |
