Tell PETA to Stop Exploiting the Autistic Community (Got Autism Billboard)

Recently, the organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) launched a new ad campaign entitled, "Got Autism?", misleadingly implying that the consumption of milk is associated with the cause of the autism spectrum. PETA is misinforming the public about autism and thus joining a long line of unscrupulous groups that have sought to try and spread fear about autism as a means of pushing their particular agendas.

Attempts such as these treat individuals with disabilities as pawns in the efforts of other constituencies. By refusing to acknowledge the right of the autistic community to be referred to with respect instead of as the focus of public hysteria, PETA contributes to a state of affairs which marginalizes the disability community.
People with disabilities, our families and our supporters deserve better than the exploitation and fear-mongering that comes about when disability is used as a means of scaring the general populace. For millions across the globe, the answer to PETA's "Got Autism?" question is an unequivocal yes. That should not spell the end of our lives or prevent us from being fully included throughout society. By exploiting us, PETA becomes a culprit in the social forces that marginalize people with disabilities and lead to the discrimination and prejudice that truly disable us.
Let PETA know how you feel about its choice to exploit autistic people by writing to them at info@peta.org or call them at 757-622-7382 and dial 0. In addition, we encourage you to express your support for these ads' swift withdrawal by signing this online petition.

But certainly there is nothing wrong with asking questions about the causes of Autism, or contributing factors that complicate it. I think people are conditioned to be offended by anything PETA does. American dairy is not good for anyone. No one disputes that diet is an important factor in health, mood, behavior, and life in general. And there really is research being done [www.medindia.net] about the links between dairy and Autism. PETA didn't make it up. There's nothing wrong with pointing it out. |

They are standing up for the autistic by helping others become aware of the causes. I have read books and articles that directly link the causes of autism to cows milk as well. You'd think if you wanted to prevent/treat it, you would want to heed what the message is trying to tell you. I really dont see what the problem is with this ad?!?!?!??!?! |

While I can understand your organizations desire to promote a vegan diet, your ad exploiting autism is beyond offensive not to mention irresponsible! Spoofing on the "Got Milk" campaign, your ad "Got Autism" that shows a bowl with cheerios in milk making a "sad face" implying that autism is a direct result of milk consumption is ridiculous and offensive. I realize you are going for the shock value by implying that milk causes autism. Of course you later state in your article "More research is needed, but scientific studies have shown that many autistic kids improve dramatically when put on a diet free of dairy foods." Which is not at all what your picture implied! I have autism and therefore have a lot more knowledge concerning this particular neurological disorder (not a disease as your article stated) than your average person. While gluten free and dairy free diets may help some autistic people there is no scientific evidence of what causes autism. Your stereotype of an autistic person throwing fits, screaming and the families who "suffer" is also very offensive. All people on the spectrum of Autism are individuals, not clones. Many individuals with autism are hard working, productive, taxpaying members of society. Who would not appreciate a "sad face" to depict their existence. How ironic that you exploited people with a nuerological disorder called autism in order to promote not exploiting animals!

I just can't get over the stupidity of this ad. There are enough valid arguments against milk--like the fact that most of the world's population can't digest it. There's no need for crappy exploitative pseudoscience. |

We do not claim that drinking milk causes autism. Our billboard was designed to raise awareness about scientific evidence indicating that milk can worsen behavior associated with autism. Researchers found that when dairy products were removed from autistic children’s diets, their behavior improved significantly. Parents who want to protect their children should steer clear of the dairy aisle and choose healthy alternatives, like soy or rice milks. The link to autism is just one of many reasons to ditch dairy. Research has linked dairy consumption to higher rates of ovarian cancer, prostate cancer, and diabetes. Dairy products have also been linked to juvenile diabetes, allergies, constipation, and obesity.
Cruelty is inherent in the dairy industry, which exploits animals by cramming them onto filthy factory farms for their entire lives. Like all mammals, cows only produce milk during and after pregnancy, so to be able to constantly milk them, farmers forcefully impregnate cows every nine months. The cows are impregnated year after year, but they are never allowed to nurture their calves. After several years of living in filthy conditions and being forced to produce 10 times more milk than they would naturally, their exhausted bodies are turned into hamburgers or ground up for soup.
Additionally, the veal industry could not survive without the dairy industry. Because male calves can’t produce milk, dairy farmers take them from their mothers immediately after birth and sell them to veal farms. There, they endure 14 to 17 weeks of torment—most calves are chained inside crates so small that they can’t even turn around. That is not ok to use us like that. I'm autistic and while I'm a vegetarian I do use dairy products and I'm really smart. I've won The Who's Who Among Americas High School Students twice and that or lack there of has nothing to do with it.
We can all do it. Milk has nothing to do with it but give us vitamins, protein, and calcium. |

However, along with Gluten, milk will aggravate certain certain areas of the brain that cause some of the hyper activities, concentration, and communication. For example, I new a young man who is very high functioning but was often off into his own world. About 5 yeard ago, he ate gluten and milk products. Luckily, his father changed his eating habits and this young man still has Autism and still goes off into his own world, but he is a) Less hyper b) Can hold down a job as a chef c) Can have a conversation with you d) Can concentrate on tasks e) He also has less meltdowns and tantrums |

How does it taste? Not the same as cow's milk, but not at all intolerable... I would say it feels nicer to drink soy milk.
At the moment, I'm not a full-fledged vegan -- for several reasons, I guess one of them being the near-ubiquity of dairy products in stores and restaurants. I have, however, stopped eating meat.
To respond to another poster, I don't think PETA is stupid. The issue of cow's milk vs. soy milk is very complex. First, cow's milk is cheaper. Second, dairy products are everywhere. They're almost trying to force-feed us. Third, many of us were raised to like cow's milk.
If the market doesn't wake up from its egocentric slumber of neglect for others' well-being, we're likely going to need to boycott animal products. This strategy involves thinking cooperatively, as if everyone were to arrive at your conclusion and act in agreement with you, rather than thinking as if your actions don't make a difference to someone else's. In a way, they do, because you're both smart people looking for the same solution.
Now, onto PETA's claim against cow's milk. They're not saying that everyone autistic drinks it, but that drinking it can cause autism. This is thought to happen through a disorder called Leaky Gut Syndrome, which supposedly allows peptides from bread to have the same effect as those from milk!
For what it's worth, I'd like to mention that I've had wheat and dairy cravings my whole life and I did not test positive for Leaky Gut -- in other words, I don't have it. My peptide levels were in the normal range (with milk slightly higher).
But I do think we should be kinder to animals.

If anyone who does not know what vegan is, it is a vegaterian that does not consume animal products at all along with extreme cases of not consuming honey and wearing leather and wool. PETA uses scare tatics in order to achieve their goals, in this case, trying to link cow's milk with autism. Because of more people dx as autistic, there are people that would associate autism as if it is the plague and would try anything to get rid of it.
In my case, that is not the best course of action. The best course of action is to gain acceptance in society with our fellow autistics and our allies. |

Animals play a role in providing us milk, and to take that away would take away the necessity for their existence (steal their purpose), that is unless we all just want more steak. Beef, it's what's for dinner.
When it comes to babies, they say the soy isn't healthy now (as opposed to cow's milk based formula). I guess soy contains some proteins that make it hard to absorb the protein, vitamins, calcium, etc. But, let's come up with more milk options to test on animals. Yeah, the research I found on this bases their point on results from testing animals.
Also, since I heard PETA thinks breast milk is better... They say for babies, breast feeding is best only if the mother is eating a healthy diet rich in animal fats and proteins. |

I mean really, taking an innocent children's game (in this case "Cooking Mama") into something as horrifying as this? When I opened the website it came up with an image of the "Cooking Mama" character with a mad look on her face holding a meat cleaver in one hand and the sickly green corpse of a turkey in the other. It was so scary I couldn't bare myself to look at the rest of the site. Also, it looks like something out of "Robot Chicken" or the mind of a High School Teenager with a twisted sense of humor.
Honestly PETA, how do you expect people to take you seriously with ads like this? Fear mongering didn't work for the Republicans in this year's election, so why do you think it will work for you? The best way to gain support for your cause is to create sympathy for those it is meant to help, not by scaring people with ads that attack innocent things like autism and the game "Cooking Mama". |

As a person with Asperger's and an interest in animal rights, I am usually pretty appalled with the way PETA does things. The Humane Society is definitely a much better alternative. |

PETA has been making some strange choices in their advertising lately (remember the ad they ran capitalising on a grisly murder that took place aboard a greyhound bus in Manitoba?)

My blog gets quite a bit of animal-rights traffic, so it will be interesting to see the response this gets.
(A side note: PETA is not really an animal rights organisation, thought they claim to be one; their emphasis is on animal welfare, and there are many people in the animal rights community who don't support PETA.) |

(User Info | Send a Message | Journal) | | I can understand, but really, it doesn't matter that it is speculated that milk causes autism (which i think is just reduculous) It's the fact that they are using it as an excuse. im not saying their cause isn't just, but it's as iff they want mothers to stop feeding their children milk so they don't have to deal with our quirks. They just need to find a way to understand us. Because we sure try to understand them. And even if milk was a cause, are they trying to prevent us from existing? I don't think they thought this through as well. It almost seems like they don't understand that autistic people understand what they are saying. Im not offended by it really, but it is a bit insensitive |

Side-Note: I love baby seals and would never actually hurt them. NEVER WOULD I EVER THINK TO HURT INNOCENT ANIMALS. just saying that "Peta just makes me want to club baby seals" seemed to get my thoughts of Peta being crazy and bad enough for me to do such a thing across more strongly.

If not the milk itself (or what chemicals the milk contains when cows are raised in an 'unnatural' state) allergies to milk need to be looked into further. I had a friend growing up that suffered from very bad asthma, after the general meds prescribed by his doctor didn't work effectively his mother decided to try a more natural approach and removed all dairy from his diet.. What happened? The asthma completely disappeared. Was this milk itself (humans are certainly smaller than cows, cow milk is designed to nourish a large animal), what the milk contained (chemicals) or was it an allergy to all dairy in general? This needs to be studied as it certainly could cause suppressed autistic genes to spring to life in an otherwise unaffected individual, same as any other disease/condition. I've seen the effects of dairy before my own eyes. On the other hand... I'm highly allergic to soy - did that contribute to my autism? I wouldn't knock anyone willing to look into that, I wouldn't knock anyone with an idea in the cause of autism for each individual either (we are all different and the cause is most likely different for all of us). There is no harm in educating yourself. |

They started out with a nice idea - "Be nice to animals" - and then they went round the twist. Nowadays they concentrate on being libellous psycho-terrorists, not to mention massive hypocrites. Milk causes autism? Well, back home in Sweden milk is a staple drink for just about everyone, including adults, and autism doesn't seem to be any higher there than anywhere else.
Go away, PETA, and leave us to our bacon butties. Oh, and consider what would happen to all the farm animals if people stopped eating meat and drinking milk... |

Maybe it's my autism. I've looked at some of the research they are basing it on and all any of it proves is that under rare certain conditions it can cause autistic like symptoms. The story from some mom the are using as there rallying cry proves it even more. The child was fine until they started giving him milk and after they took him off it the symptoms went away. Doctors make diagnoses all the time missing based on the symptoms with out looking for the underlying problem. |

...yet....I am still Aspergers/Tourettes/SPD
Explain that PETA!!!
I am getting so tired of Vegans telling me to just cut out the milk and my autism would go away. |
