Diane Kruger and Alex Plank on set of The Bridge
In this special episode of ATTV, Diane Kruger (Inglorious Bastards, Troy, National Treasure) sits down with Alex Plank of WrongPlanet.net for an exclusive interview where they discuss the character of Sonya (a detective with Asperger's) and Alex's role as Asperger / Autism consultant for The Bridge.

The Bridge premieres today July 10th at 10pm on FX! The Bridge follows the story of Sonya Cross and Marco Ruiz, two detectives from both sides of the US/Mexican border who are responsible for hunting down a serial killer operating in both Juarez Mexico and El Paso, Texas.

The Bridge, based on Swedish/Danish show of the same name, was created by Elwood Reid and Meredith Stiehm. Diane Kruger stars in the series as an autistic detective along with Demian Bichir, Ted Levine, Annabeth Gish, Matthew Lillard, Thomas M. Wright, Johnny Dowers, Emily Rios, Eric Lange, Catalina Sandino, and Carlos Pratts.

Adam - thanks for sending out a message about this. We'd seen a couple commercials for the show and it looked like it was going to be pretty dark and violent, but maybe I'll give it a chance - yeah, looks like we get FX. Interesting to note that she mentions Autism Speaks as having helped her develop her character (along with WP), but maybe they have their value, too :-) Anyway, thanks for the heads up, I'll set up to record it and check it out.

Thanks to both Diane and Alex for sharing this interview about their collaborative project: 'The Bridge' looks to be promising and so great that Sonya the detective is an Aspie! Thanks Alex for being the ambassador so we are represented too. As a result, I imagine more future TV programmes will present their interesting AS characters in a positive light.

I really enjoyed the Swedish-Norwegian coproduction and several incidents in it are performed so well, so understated, that they would make excellent classroom exercises in discussing autism. Her actual diagnosis, if she has one, is never mnetioned - Saga's not-so-nice colleagues laugh about her saying "Does he know that she is a little ... 'special'?", "If he doesn't, then he soon will".

I was interested in the show from the trailers, but reading about Alex's involvement made me watch. I am so glad I did. Diane Kruger does a really good job conveying the essence of Asperger's without overdoing it. I particularly enjoyed her "rules" rigidity as my son (age 22) has had issues at work with others not following the rules and getting away with it! :) Thank you, Alex, for your commitment to educating this planet about the Aspie planet! Excellent work.

I really enjoyed the Danish-Swedish original Broen/Bron, and I think Diane Kruger is a great actress, so I was really looking forward to The Bridge. And thus far it's delivered. Great acting, particularly from Kruger, Levine and Bichir, and they've done a great job of believably transferring the plot from Malmo-Copenhagen to El Paso-Juarez. Fantastic interview; thanks for posting it on your site!

I missed this, don't check email often enough, I guess. In the United States, I'm not sure how well a person like me would fit into a regular police department. From my mother's experience, I would say "Not very well." It would take a very special blend of people that are perhaps not so usual in a police department to allow that to happen (that is, not fitting the macho stereotype, be outgoing, and have very thick skin). Perhaps this is less in Scandinavia as they don't have the cowboy image to live up to? Anyway, Diane is nice to look at, and its nice to have a positive role of someone in an atypical career for us. Hopefully, it won't become some sort of joke to others.

Somewhere in my top ten boilerplate obsessions lie the works of Quentin Tarantino. Despite layman's terminology, I just had to comment in solidarity with Diane's message of respectful deference and the finer points of ASDs contrasted with personal trauma.

Most beautiful woman in the world. I remember when I was 12 when National Treasure came to theatres and I said to myself ''This is the most beautiful woman that I will ever see in my lifetime.'' Nine years later, I still crush on her. And to think she said in an interview that she doesn't have great skin..

Yup... Alex is definitely one of us. No matter how many big people he interviews and rubs shoulders with, he's not climbing up the popularity/career ladder at all. 99% of Americans have never heard of him and never will. So much work... such little progress. the aspie story.
