^^^ you made a good point! I wish the diagnosis included fMRI because there's already enough comparison studies where NT and ASD brains respond differently to the same stimuli. After all, it's a neurological condition, not just a set of behaviors. I wish everyone knew that the diagnosis was based o...

Autistic Girls Are Undiagnosed, Underserved And Misunderstood ^ true. What tends to worry me more is the high rate of missed AS + misdiagnosis of another condition, which has been a frequent report made on WP over the years. The basing of "professional" knowledge on male only samples in r...

If you don't want a diagnosis per se, but you want answers, you can go to a local university or autism research center and take an assessment there. That's what I did. I took a "gold standard" diagnostic tool that stated that I'm very likely on the spectrum, but due to the context of the d...

Immensely. I still use my fingers for basic addition and subtraction. When people say numbers, I request they write it down or show me the numbers because I cannot interpret numbers orally. I failed college calculus twice and I'm taking it for third (and hopefully final) time.

Absolutely, positively not! One of my trademarks is having a unique personality and perspective on life. I don't "suffer" like people think I do. It makes me... me! Autism Spectrum Disorder is not a detriment to to my life nor does it define me. Why would I want to cure something that does...

For me, I'm not sure if I'd use the word oppressive . I believe the contemporary schooling system desperately needs reform, but like most, I do not have any solutions. I have had some really bad teachers but I have also had some excellent teachers. As someone on the spectrum, you can imagine the iss...

I pick at the skin on my fingers, lips, and acne on my face. I rarely do it to the point of drawing blood, but on the occassion that I do, it scares me out of skin picking until I forget. I only pick at dry skin that is already coming up. I used to pick at my scabs until my mother explained to me wh...

I have heard that people on the autism spectrum tend to be more likely to identify as a sexual minorities (asexual, bisexual, etc.) than their neurotypical counterparts. As an LGBT aspie, I can attest to this claim (I'm speaking for myself). Are you an LGBT aspie? How do you feel about this claim? D...

I think about this constantly, especially after my assessment. This topic is of interest to me as a female on the spectrum. Luckily for me, I was never misdiagnosed with anything. When I became of age, I walked into an autism center and asked to be tested for ASD. That was that! Unfortunately, I do ...

I remember seeing this movie on Netflix years ago. I really liked it. As someone on the spectrum, I can say that Mandy is not an accurate representation of me becuase I am on the high functioning end of the spectrum. One of my favorite quotes is "when you've met one person with autism, you've m...

A few months ago, I recieved an informal diagnosis of ASD (autism spectrum disorder). I took the ADOS-2 with through a local university with a graduate researcher rather than a doctor. That is the best I could do for now. I'm so excited about finally having an answer for why I am the way I am and I ...
