For boys, they get a testosterone boost around this age and things can go a bit pear-shaped. Not sure about girls, but guess hormones kick in for them too at different stages.

Thank you, all. That helps. Think we will give it a try and see what happens.

Am looking into getting contact lenses for our 13-yr old son, instead of glasses. He has Aspergers and some sensory issues to go with it eg. doesn't like woollen jerseys, overheats, is pain-sensitive when he is more anxious/upset. Do contact lenses create sensory issues or do most ASD people find it...

Another thing is to remember to communicate as literally you can on everything and not by inference. Our son can be the same, and often it is the way we phrase things eg. my husband said to him the other night, "Isn't it time you went to bed?" ... and then wanted to know 15 minutes later why he hadn...

Thank you all for your comments. It helped to hear opinions on both sides. Another school is not really an option for us with being in a small town. We are going to see what the school has to offer and whether they can make it a safe environment as much as possible. If we don't think it's enough, th...

So, this week I need to make a big decision - either to send my high-functioning son back to school or withdraw him and homeschool. He's gone to a bigger school this year, is in a gifted class and it all seemed to start really well ... however over the last few months he's been increasingly complain...

I think it makes a difference, but sometimes difficult to gauge. Other dietary supplements I'm using are Phosphatydil Serine (promotes better function of neurotransmitters in brain) and ToCoQ10 (helps with concentration and energy). Have managed to stay drug free so far as a result. :)

I can relate to it being confusing, knowing that your child isn't "normal" but trying to work out what the issues and diagnosis is. Personally I found that reading and research was the best help. At one stage I read Tony Attwood's "Aspergers Syndrome" book and went through with pen and paper and wro...

Ok. Sorry - my experience is with high-functioning Aspergers. Hopefully there are others who can help.

In the particular instance you're talking about, I probably would take something off him and explain that he has to learn to control how he feels about that. For our 11 year old, he loses computer time because that's his special interest. I agree with not punishing meltdowns, but int the long-term k...

Could you give us a general idea of the type of questions? And also, are you looking for feedback on the whole spectrum or just a certain group? eg. high-functioning Aspergers is a completely different ball game to others who are severely affected in their communication with others.

this is the forum discussion that finally convinced me to sign on. My 19 year old's behavior and life is reflected in so many of these posts, but when I read about the coughing tic, I KNEW. As I tried to indicate with my sign-in nickname, I do not view "differently" wired brains as a handicap, but ...

We tell people as much info as we think they need to know or would understand. Most parents at school, I just say that our sons a bit different "more academic and less social", whereas some I will say that he has some Aspergers traits. I find it easier to put it that way because it means he doesn't ...

Does anyone know anything about coughing tics and if there's anything herbal/natural you can do to stop them? Also would be interested in what type of coughing tics people have experienced? My 7 yr old son has had a cough for months. Doctor thinks it is a tic, but is also doing asthma testing and ch...

At the IEP, I would try and get a dispensation on homework. My son is AS and has struggled with homework - school is for schoolwork and home is for home stuff, as far as he's concerned. Between the ages of 7-10 he was pretty much allowed to do minimal homework. Reading was encouraged . . . and then ...

DandelionFireworks - This is one of the best posts I have ever read. Thank you for explaining things so clearly and helping me better understand myself. I agree. The whole "spark" and "fuel" terminology really makes sense and helps me understand my son. Think I will print that off and stick it in m...
