Government is not necessarily secure, many agencies have been hit by furloughs. I am a federal government employee and do recommend it for people on the spectrum....if they can get in. It can be pretty difficult for a non-veteran or member of some other status group [full disclosure...I was hired in...

A few years ago I tried to explain Asperger's to my mom and she just didn't want to hear it....and I learned that even back when I was a kid people at school had told her they suspected some type of autism but she refused to pursue it and said that I would grow out of it. Gave up on trying to tell h...

That one really depends on what you do....a lot of the jobs don't require anything beyond passing a drug test. I had to pass one to work at the Post Office, but that was the extent of it. Background checks become a factor if you have a job where you have access to something that in theory would give...

Heh heh....guess it's my literal aspie brain but somehow I had the idea that you meant somehow being fired twice from the same job.... But yes, I've been fired I'd say twice, maybe four times depending on how you look at it. I was fired at my first job as a dishwasher...I was too slow and I couldn't...

It is really a numbers game....people just have to keep trying, and one big key is to be willing to relocate.

With me I think a lot of employers were kind of ignorant about career paths in my field....I have a CPA but only one year of accounting experience. I was turned down for a entry level position at a private company because they were afraid I'd leave to work at a CPA firm again once the economy improv...

The thing about public accounting is, there are two pieces of it that are equally important....the technical skill part and the socialization/teamwork part. From my experience, I'd say the socialization/teamwork part is actually somewhat more important, especially for someone just starting out. It d...

I currently work for the federal government. We do hire people, but it can be tough to get in unless you are a vet or hired as some other preference candidate. I was hired under Indian Preference, but there are only a handful of jobs/agencies that use that--I had to relocate cross country for my cur...

I am an accountant working for a US government agency and have Asperger's. This is my first really solid job opportunity in accounting--I've worked here nearly a year and it's going really well. I think the best accounting jobs for people on the spectrum are the ones that involve regular transaction...

I have trouble dealing with ambiguity and social cues....I am trying to adapt to an environment where I don't always have clear direction from senior people on how to proceed, what to do, etc. I hold things in a lot because I know I don't dare express my frustration. Ideally I'd like a position wher...

Dishwasher---was just too slow for the job, plus they really wanted someone who could take on other tasks as well as wash dishes. My first job, I think I lasted maybe a month. I did have better luck later on washing dishes at the dining hall in college because there was less time pressure, but I jus...

Accountant too.... Didn't go into it until my thirties when I went back to school. I don't mind it and I am doing okay at this job [only been here seven months] but I'm only now convinced that I can find a place in this field. I was ready to give up for a while there---got fired from my first accoun...

I've made 58k at one point, but currently make 48k. However, 48k where I'm living now is worth 80k in the location where the higher paying job was located, so it's almost as if I got a raise.

Sequestration has not affected my subagency [of Health and Human Services] yet, but we are looking at the upcoming fight over the Continuing Resolution with great concern, if they do not vote to keep the government running that will result in everyone having to stay home until they agree to continue...

Audit is definitely more people-oriented, although in some cases tax people can get stuck working on the income tax portion of an audit and end up basically having the same working conditions as auditors. Thankfully it never happened to me, but for several people I knew that was all they ever did, t...

BTW, the public accounting position where I failed miserably was in PWC's tax practice [in Silicon Valley]. Of course, not all offices are alike, but mine was a very competitive, aggressive environment with a lot of competition for work assignments. It was a terrible place for me. I would say tax ma...
