I agree that it's more complex than "white males have an easier time getting a diagnosis."

The other autistic people I've met have tended to be white and from well-educated backgrounds, which fits with what I've read about diagnostic biases.

"Neurodiversity" is just a word white autistic people use to sugarcoat the fact that the big names in autistic representation are heterosexual, white, English-speaking and culturally Christian, and the relative difficulty minorities have in seeking a diagnosis. Until this problem is addre...

I'm confused about some things here. 1. How does talking about being androgynous between the ears alienate people? If it confuses people, then they're not in a position to give informed consent to medical transition, and need to learn about it. But how does it alienate people? 2. I don't understand ...

I think the solution to transness/dysphoria/confusion about these issues, especially for autistic people, is to focus on something else. Take up sports and become fit; climb mountains; write a book; write music or do art; travel the world - become good at something . I think that is where the cure ...

I considered transitioning back in the '80s, but I guess I don't have any credibility since I didn't go through with it. The hang up for me was my pelvis: in order to pass as a (very short) man I would have had to have it broken up and reset, since I have child-bearing hips, and that wasn't (and I a...

I have to agree with starkid here. As much as trans folks want to erase biological reality, we need a language to refer to it. We need to be able to distinguish between natal males and natal females, for a wide variety of reasons. For starters, natal males and natal females have different medical is...

I'm sorry that happened to you. I guess I meant ideologically trendy, not on-the-street trendy.

I want to accept people for who they are, without being required to accept their beliefs about sex and gender, because I see some of those beliefs as harmful. I want more rigorous debate.

Is anyone here familiar with John E. Sarno's work on psychogenic pain? The idea is that sometimes our minds create physical pain by restricting blood flow to tissues to deprive them of oxygen, so we have a physical condition we can fuss over as a distraction from painful emotions (anger, fear). Our ...

What if we came up with a treatment that didn't involve transitioning? There are people detransitioning now who may be able to point us to alternate therapies for dysphoria. What if we could get the culture to change, to make it commonplace to have brains that don't match our physical sex role stere...

LonelyRabbit, I'm really glad you sorted your feelings out before doing anything drastic.

I think it's normal for girls to want to be boys. Both Katharine Hepburn and Indira Gandhi dressed as boys and referred to themselves as boys when they were children, iirc.

Hmm bit confused by that. Who would claim that? Who are these males? Transwomen (#notalltranswomen) and left-wing men (#notallleftwingmenbutfartoomany) who say that transwomen are just as much women as other women. Even in a completely unbigoted world, women would still be at a disadvantage due to ...

Physical sex matters when it comes to medical issues, including reproductive health. It also seems to matter when discussing whether physical sex matters or not, since it seems to matter a lot more to uterus-havers than not-uterus-havers. (I was going to write women and men but apparently those word...

Older woman here. There's been research showing autistic people tend to have more androgynous brains. Some of us may be average all the way down, while others may be strongly male and strongly female in different domains. It can be confusing. A lot of what people are calling gender is socialization,...

Hi, I haven't been here for a while and in the meantime the whole trans thing has blown up. I'm seeing surveys of detransitioned transmen who are disproportionately autistic, and I'm seeing reports that autistic people are targeted by pro-trans arguments. My own experience as an autistic woman is th...

I'm macho compared to other women, and blunt, and not interested in conventional female interests. But compared to men I'm really girly, and most men really don't like that, not to hang out with. So I only really get along with other androgynous types.

A while back (2013 - sorry I can't find the post here) I was feeling frustrated and generated a questionnaire about autistic symptoms from the perspective of an autistic person. I posted one version on my website, got some data (mostly people from here), posted a revised version, left it for two yea...
