I read somewhere that an adult woman with aspergers can appear outwardly well adjusted and 'normal' whilst dying inside. so well do we mirror NT's and cover up our own social inneptitude. That pretty much describes me pre-diagnosis (ie the first 50 years of my life). Now that I know what I'm dealin... |

While walking to campus today, there was a garbage truck that had a very salient and very piercing wail used to warn people that it was backing out. It was coming out of an underground parking lot, and so this siren was amplified to a grand extent. It made me realize that I have a sensory input str... |

As much as I disagree with the ad, we have to remember the 1st Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. They can say/do whatever the hell they want. Even though the advert originated in England, the 1st Amendment gives us the right to speak out against it. Yes, anyone can say whatever they want (except ... |

HarryWillliams, thanks for posting this link to Prof. Baron-Cohen's statement. I am always yelling my head off (okay, a little hyperbole there) about the power of words and imagery to create good or cause harm. I hope the advert gets scrapped very soon. We don't need demonic images associated with a... |

I've heard it said that the only difference between HFA and AS is the spelling. I think they're getting merged in the DSM-V. |

Hi Alex, Just want to echo what Millie said about seeing an AS specialist. Do not settle for anyone else. A number of us have some really awful stories to tell about clueless professionals. If you need to get a referral from your GP or any other provider, they may very well try to discount your perc... |

Mllie, I am so sorry to hear about what you're going through. I can relate, as I'm divorced from my daughter's father. This is a major reorientation, and you should expect the rules of the game to change. Right now, you have an agreement worked out with your ex-partner regarding parenting, but once ... |

You sound like a *great* person, and your mother sounds like she has some issues, big time. She sounds a lot like my mother was. Totally overwhelming and very controlling. Like a whirlwind. Does your father stand up for you? Maybe you could talk with him about it and see if you two can work out a s... |

My Mom has actually said… “Aspergers is just an excuse for you to act like a brat! I wish your Father hadn’t gotten you diagnosed because now you have an excuse to be the way you are, so now you have more of an excuse to just be a brat. (I am seriously not a brat! I do my chores without being asked... |

I am meeting with the psychologist on February 10th. It is a one-and-a-half hour diagnostic interview. I am nervous now because I want to be fully prepared when I go in there, to have it go as smoothly as possible. For those of you that have been diagnosed, what type of appointment did you have (i.... |

The thought of taking anything apart gives me a mini-panic attack. The thought of having to put it all back together makes me want to weep. Except with knitting. I don't mind unravelling my work if I make a mistake. In fact, it's kind of cathartic. But it's not the same as taking apart computers <sh... |

What nonverbal mannerisms? I'm completely oblivious. Before I learned about AS, I didn't even know they existed. Facial expressions, (I believe either over or just under 400 of them, although my memory for numbers is very poor, so I could easily be mistaken, certainly there are hundreds though), ha... |
