So where do I go from here? I can't erase the past because these memories creep up all the time (the body image, refusal to talk to me, my parents constantly asking me to change when I know I can't). The only people that really love me in my family are my aunt and uncle and Grandma. Everyone else e...

While not directly related to AS, there is a lot of information about "toxic families" and "toxic relationships" - it might be beneficial to research this some more. My heart goes out to you. I finally had to draw a line in the sand with my father who is a classic narcissist. I stopped trying to be...

Will start by saying I have not been diagnosed with with ASD, but my daughter has. However, I have a lot of odd traits that made me, when I was younger, difficult to relate to. I'm quiet, have a certain amount of anxiety, love books and words, am somewhat cerebral...etc. My mom is sooo outgoing, mus...

I've had the honor of following the same child now for 4 years. After next year we will have been in the same classroom together for 5. We are both at a Montessori school. I was assisting in his primary classroom and now assist in his lower elementary classroom. I think he has been diagnosed with tu...

My daughter was always an excellent traveler. With the exception of airport waits, she did great. Her only issue with traveling as she became old enough to pack herself....she wants to be prepared for every circumstance that might occur. She packs a huge amount. Medication, bandaids...(anything that...

It might help to give her a list of words she's not aloud to use. We do this in our classrooms. Shut-up and stupid, dumb and idiot. We have to make a rule about saying these words because at this age (1-3rd grade) is when kids experiement with that language. It helps if there are rules about it. Tha...

My daughter takes adderol. Of course it isn't a magic pill, and I think she is starting to see some of the side effects as a hinderance. She's recently asked for a decrease, which with some discussion with the dr, we decided to do. But I think it really depends on the person...not all drugs work for...

I like what the team came up with and I hope it's successful. I think it could be a very good thing because it lets him know that responsibility for getting rid of the aid rests with him....and it lets him know very clearly what needs to happen for him to be without the aid. I think it's a great sol...

Thanks for the advice and link. She decided to start taking a half dose, and I emailed the Dr. about what had transpired as well as her tendancy to shut down in the office. I had a good conversation with the Doctor today where she agreed that doing a half dose was worth trying. So it seems like we'r...

Big problem. My daughter shuts down at the dr. It starts happening on the way in, happens all the way through from waiting room to office to questioning portion of appt. She puts her head down and basically acts catatonic. She's 14. So she's at the point where they are asking her to have the most im...

I don't think your child should change classes yet. But I don't think bullying should be allowed either. In my own classroom, I keep a really tight handle on what's going on socially and if I hear something that I don't like, I monitor for a minute to see if the kids can come to their senses...but i...

42 here and have talked to myself all my life. Sometimes in public. I refrain from that now, but didn't always. I wasn't thinking there was another person there...but as someone else said, it was a way for me to organize my thoughts or work something out. If I've had a bad day or am worried about so...

I like the ideas of smen and jagati. It may be that he's telling you it's time that he be responsible for himself. This is not to say that there won't be fall-out if the aid is gone, but I think it will give him the experience of learning how to handle himself. That will be very difficult at first.....

This is a tough one. When my daughter was 7-8, I felt it was necessary to talk about a friend's father who had a brain tumor and we didn't think he was going to live. I think I got it wrong. I explained about how sometimes parents die and we'd do everything possible for her friend and my friend to h...

My daughter once explained this to me very well...and she was only about 8 at the time. I'd noticed out loud for her that her behavior at home at that time had really taken a nose dive. At the time she had a lot of tantrums, and she began having like one every single evening. It was absolutely exhau...
